On Rhythm + Flow: Brazil, judges Djonga, Filipe Ret, and twin sisters Tasha & Tracie bring their unique regional influences to guide contestants. The show highlights both the contestants' music and the judges' cultural roots and career journeys, filmed in their hometowns.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil: More about the judges
Djonga
Gustavo Pereira Marques, also known as Djonga, is one of the most prominent names in Brazil’s contemporary rap scene.
Djonga, born in Belo Horizonte in 1994 and raised in Favela do Índio, uses his powerful lyrics to address social issues like racism and inequality in Brazil, becoming a voice for marginalized communities. Inspired by an ex-girlfriend to pursue rap, his influences include Brazilian icon Milton Nascimento and Janis Joplin. Although he studied history at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, Djonga left to focus on his rap career, where he quickly made an impact.
Today, he continues to use his platform for both music and social justice, including active participation in protests against racial violence.
Filipe Ret
Filipe Ret, born Filipe Cavaleiro de Macedo da Silva Faria in 1985, hails from the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro. He first gained attention in the early 2000s as a graffiti artist, a passion that transitioned into a successful music career.
Ret’s entry into the rap scene began with MC battles in Lapa, and by 2012, he achieved national recognition with his album Vivaz.
His unique style blends melodic rap with philosophical and poetic references, making him stand out in Brazil’s music industry. As a co-founder of the independent label Tudubom Records, Filipe Ret has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s independent music landscape.
Over the years, he has released multiple critically acclaimed albums, including Numa Margem Distante and Audaz, cementing his legacy as a pioneering figure in Brazilian rap.
Tasha & Tracie
Tasha & Tracie Okereke, twin sisters from São Paulo, are making waves in Brazil’s hip-hop, fashion, and activism scenes. Their journey began with the launch of their fashion blog, Expensive $hit, which evolved into a movement that empowers Black women from the periphery.
Born to a Nigerian father and Brazilian mother, the sisters have navigated multiple cultural influences, using their art to challenge societal norms.
Starting as DJs at São Paulo’s Batalha de Santa Cruz, Tasha & Tracie eventually took center stage as rappers, signing with the Ceia Ent label. Their debut project Cachorra Kmikze and the EP Rouff, produced with rapper Ashira, gained significant attention in the underground scene.
The sisters’ music is known for its raw energy, feminist themes, and celebration of Black identity. Their 2020 single Tang, in collaboration with rapper Kyan, became a viral sensation, further boosting their visibility.
In 2022, they won the 'Revelation' award at the WME Awards and were nominated for 'Best International Flow' at the BET Hip Hop Awards. As judges on Rhythm + Flow: Brazil, Tasha & Tracie are set to bring a fresh perspective, combining creativity with activism to inspire the contestants.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil stands out for its authenticity and its focus on nurturing homegrown talent. By combining the voices of seasoned artists like Djonga, Filipe Ret, and Tasha & Tracie, the show is set to be a defining moment for Brazilian rap.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil premieres on November 12, 2024, with the first part featuring four episodes.
