Kin appeared on episode 1 of Shark Tank season 13 which aired in October 2021. Founded by Philomina Kane in 2020, Kin was short for 'Keep it naturally' and was a brand of hoodies that was lined with satin. She claimed that the use of the material would protect hair naturally.

Her online store also sold various other products related to hair care.

She shared that she had learned natural hair care remedies from her grandmother during her stay in Ghana.

She claimed that satin helped retain moisture thus keeping the hair from getting frizzy and breaking. She also had hats and caps lined with satin to serve the same purpose.

She asked for $200,000 for 10% equity in her company. She broke a deal with Emma Grede, the guest judge of the episode who paired with Lori Greiner to give Philomina the amount for 30% equity.

After the show, Kin doubled its sales and even added an array of new products to the mix. As of July 2024, Kin had $4 million in sales.

Update on Kin from Shark Tank season 13

After Philomina's company appeared on Shark Tank season 13, it was subjected to the 'Shark Tank effect'. This meant that it was marketed through the show's platform, because of which it did double in their sales that year. Their revenue for the year 2021 was $1 million.

Philomina now operates her company with a staff of 15 people. She has stopped employing family members, according to Shark Tank blog, because of the "drama" involved.

In 2021, they also introduced new products such as satin lined beanies, pillow cases, windbreakers, car headrest covers, and even a onesie.

Philomina still hasn't dabbled into the retail market as she keeps up her sales through her original wholesale model. In 2023, Kin reached $4.9 in annual sales. Later that year, Kin was seeking about $2 million in funding to grow her business and she received $75,000 of it from Pharell Williams', Williams’ Black Ambition Prize.

She also ran a WeFunder campaign in 2024, that got her an addition $341,280. As on July 2024, Kin's lifetime sales reached $8 million while her yearly sale was $4 million.

Kin's pitch on Shark Tank season 13 episode 1

Explaining the idea of her company, Philomina said that she cut her hair off because she couldn't afford hair care products.

She said that she used to wrap a satin scarf around her hair before putting on a hoodie, which is where she got the idea from.

She shared that even though she was accepted into Columbia School of Public Health, she chose not to go and focus on her YouTube chanel instead, which focused on hair-care solutions.

Talking about the product, Philomina said that she got the hoodie made from China for $16.75 per piece and sold it for $80. Her first year i.e. 2020, Philomina did $246,000 in sales. Halfway through 2021, when she appeared on Shark Tank season 13, Philomina boasted a sale of $355,000.

Kevin O' Leary said hair care wasn't his field of expertise so he chose to opt out. Barbara Corcoran said Philomina was "chaotic poetry in motion" and was out as well. Mark Cuban praised Philomina's business sense but opted out because he thought she needed to figure out what she didn't know.

Emma said she was on a lookout for black female founded companies, so she offered her 30% for $300,000 and brought Lori in on the deal as well.

Philomina first asked for a 20%, when the sharks declined, she countered it again with a $25%. So she accepted the deal and even shed a few tears of joy.

New episodes of Shark Tank season 16 come out on Fridays at 8 pm ET, on ABC.
