"Started by my daughter"- The Golden Bachelorette contestant Charles shares who encouraged him to sign up for the show

The Golden Bachelorette showcased the love lives of a different generation getting another chance at finding their partner. 66-year-old Charles L. was one of the fan-favorite contestants on the dating reality TV show, who won the viewers' hearts through his genuine personality. As per his official bio on ABC's website, Charles is described as a sweet guy with a great sense of humor.

He moved to the States from China, and is a Brittany Spears fan. Recently, Charles was interviewed on the The Viall Files podcast, where he talked about his overall experience on the show. He opened up about his wife's passing, the lesson he learned being on the dating series, and the friends he made along the way. On the podcast released on October 18, 2024, Charles shared that his daughter told him about the dating reality TV show. He said:

"You are correct, actually it originated, started by my daughter, who initiated and she said Dad here's the program so on and on forth and I said well let me give a shot. I don't know if I'll be in the program but you know, it's a surprise."

During his interview, Charles shared that the filming and application process was "unique," and he was surprised after receiving the call that he was joining the show as one of the cast members. The Golden Bachelorette contestant continued describing his interaction with producers and how he felt after being informed that he was accepted.

"Such a unique experience when I started to apply for the program I didn't even expect I would be accepted but as the application process started, I loved the producers, and the interviews that I went through. And then at the end, they called me, 'Charles you know, you're in the program.' So such a gorgeous experience," Charles said.

When asked about what his experience taught him, The Golden Bachelorette cast member shared that his "philosophy" is to express love and care for people. Charles said everyone should have a "warm heart" to "love" others. He continued stating:

"You have to have a warm heart to love people, to care about people. And when you do that, you'll be respected and people in return will love you, you know this is basically my kind of philosophy. Be yourself, be nice to other people and the rest will take care of itself."

Talking about coping with grief after his wife passed away, Charles stated that he opened up about his feelings on the show. The Golden Bachelorette contestant said that it was okay to express sadness and feel grief while missing the "the loved one you lost." Charles mentioned that he became friends with other cast members and formed a genuine connection with them, and he is still in contact with a few. The 66-year-old retired financial analyst said:

"We have to do something. We have to open up ourselves and reach out you know, to other people who can also help you."

He concluded:

"So this is you know what I went through, and on the date groups, one on one interviews, even you know, in the morning talks I gradually changed myself, I feel better and better with more engagement with all the members in the mansion."
