So far, season 21 of The Bachelorette has seen eliminations, stronger connections, and group dates weekly as Jenn Tran hunts for her one true love. Episode 5 featured 12 men who try to win Jenn's heart through group and one-on-one dates. After her ex-boyfriend Matt Rosi appeared on the show and gave her a surprise, the other guys started to feel threatened in his presence.
In this episode, Matt revealed his intentions regarding why he wanted to contact Jenn. Two cast members went home during the rose ceremony, and one contestant self-eliminated from the show. Additionally, Tran went on a one-on-one helicopter and vineyard date with Jonathon Johnson.
A group date was also planned with the seven remaining guys Devin, Sam, Marcus, Spencer, Jeremy, Dylan, and Austin on a sheep farm. The Bachelorette season 21 episode 5 ended with another one-on-one picnic date with Grant Ellis.
The Bachelorette season 21 episode 5 was released on August 5, 2024. The episode synopsis reads:
"Jenn has a big decision to make following an unexpected visit from her past; from dates in helicopters to a group date on a sheep farm, Jenn and the men explore New Zealand."
The Bachelorette season 21 episode 5 - Austin leaves the show
On The Bachelorette season 21 episode 5, Matt Rosi couldn't stay on the show as Jenn explained she was unaware of his strong feelings before the filming started. Rosi wanted Jenn to give him another chance but this season's lead wasn't interested in revisiting her past. She wanted to give the new guys a fair shot at being with her.
After Matt's departure, the first rose ceremony results concluded that John M. and Thomas N. were going home. Next up was Tran's date with Jonathon Johnson, who admitted that opening up in front of others was hard for him. The Bachelorette season 21 contestant tried to build a strong connection by highlighting his past romantic experiences.
They both had a similar experience with an emotionally abusive partner, which was a topic they could relate to. By the end of the heartfelt date, Tran gave Jonathan a rose.
When it was time for the group date, out of Devin, Sam, Marcus, Spencer, Jeremy, Austin, and Dylan, Austin decided to leave the show. Explaining his reason for doing so, he said:
“You have amazing guys here who are ready to give you everything you deserve. With the way things are going for me on this journey, I don’t think I can do that.”
Tran respected this decision but doubted her own abilities to secure a match with someone. During her confessional interview, she got emotional as to maybe her fear of not finding someone by the end of the show might get real.
Later in the episode, Texas native Grant Ellis and Tran went on a date where they shared their memories of childhood and upbringing. Grant felt comfortable sharing with Tran about his father's addiction recovery. The Bachelorette season 21 star was appreciative of Ellis for making an effort to rekindle his relationship with his father. This was the first time the two had one-on-one time, with Jenn giving him a rose.
Apart from Matt Rossi, John M., Thomas N., and Austin, Dylan was sent home as well. Stream The Bachelorette season 21 exclusively on ABC.
