The Boyfriend season 1 has made waves in the reality TV realm as Japan's first same-sex dating reality series. The show premiered to much anticipation on July 9, 2024, and showcased its finale on July 30. On the show, viewers were introduced to a diverse group of men on a quest to find love.
Unlike traditional dating shows, The Boyfriend focuses on self-discovery and forming genuine connections or friendships. The nine participants (Alan, Dai, Gensei, Ikuo, Kazuto, Ryota, Shun, Taeheon, and Usak) live together in the Green Room and try to run a coffee truck together.
The contestant's age varied with the youngest being 22 years old and the oldest, 36 years old. The official synopsis of The Boyfriend reads:

1) Alan
- Age: 29 years old
- Profession: IT company employee
Alan originally hails from Brazil and has Japanese, Brazilian, and Italian genes within him. He currently has amassed over 90,000 followers on Instagram. Alan described himself as an "assertive type" in episode 3 and even spent a night with Kazuto.
Kazuto initially described the date as uncomfortable which led to Alan giving Kazuto some space until the finale of The Boyfriend aired. In the final episode, Kazuto wished to continue their relationship and get to know each other better.
2) Dai

Dai is one of the youngest participants in The Boyfriend season 1 and pursues Shun throughout the show. His budding relationship with Shun went through various ups and downs.

Ikuo was presented to the Green Room participants and the viewers in the middle of the show. However, that might not have played to his advantage as many had established connections by that time. He did have a connection with Dai and also pursued Kazuto. But after Shun and Dai sorted out their feelings towards each other, Ikuo left the show alone.
5) Kazuto

His skills in the kitchen came in handy during the run of the show. Alan and Kazuto formed a bond initially, but after a night out, they took a step back. Eventually, they built a connection and in the finale, they left the house holding each other's hands. He currently has amassed over 200,000 followers on Instagram.
6) Ryota

- Profession: Model and barista
One of the participants in the show claimed boldly that he was open to all possibilities. Ryota confessed his feelings for Kazuto during the entirety of the season including the finale, but Kazuto rejected him. 7) Shun
