The Boyfriend, a dating reality show, debuted on Netflix on July 9, 2024, and welcomed nine men looking to find love. The men lived in The Green Room, a beach house, learning about themselves, friendships, and love.
The show is Japan's first-ever same-s*x dating reality show. It took a different route than most reality shows since participants got a look at what their lives could be with the person they chose. All the men took turns and worked in shifts on a coffee truck. This helped them get to know each other before going back home.
Dai, a 22-year-old, and Shun, a 23-year-old, were two participants on the show. While the two didn't get together until later in the show, they expressed a liking for one another.
On the first night, the cast was tasked with writing anonymous love letters to the person they chose, and Dai chose Shun. Dai received three letters and hoped that one was from Shun. However, the latter revealed that he didn't think anyone in the Green House was his type, so he didn't write a letter.
As the show progressed, Shun found himself attracted to Dai, who reciprocated his feelings. However, their time on the show was not without hiccups, as they often bickered and disagreed about their relationship. They made things official at the end of episode 8 when they slept in the same bed and shared a kiss.
However, it remains to be seen what the status of their relationship is when the show releases its finale two episodes on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
The Boyfriend: Dai and Shun's journey explored
The Boyfriend season 1 premiered on July 9, 2024. Once the entire cast gathered, Dai expressed an interest in Shun, but the latter didn't feel the same way initially. In episode 2, the cast was given a choice to pick a person of their choice to work the coffee truck and Dai chose Shun.
As the two spent the day working together, they got to know each other better. Dai also said that he enjoyed himself and felt the urge to kiss The Boyfriend star since they were in such close proximity.
After wrapping up work, the two spent time together in the park and opened up about their dating history. However, others were vying for Shun's affection, including Ryoto and Taehon. Although Shun initially said he didn't think anyone was his type, he later told Ryoto he was interested in Dai.
However, they faced their first hurdle after Shun accidentally opened Dai's gallery on his phone. He found, what he believed were, pictures that could have been used on dating apps, which left Shun shocked.
"He was naked. Yeah, I think he's a playboy. It was something that I didn't want to see," Shun told the cameras.
Throughout the show, the two cast members faced several difficulties despite liking one another until episodes 7-8. The two The Boyfriend cast mates were in an uncomfortable spot after Ikou and Dai worked in the coffee truck together. When they got back to The Green Room, Shun asked Dai for a private conversation.
Shun explained why he didn't volunteer to go with Dai and said that he was "overwhelmed." Dai pointed out that Shun had messaged him, saying that while he did want to work with Dai, he didn't feel like he could.
"I felt like you were pushing me away," Dai stated.
Shun spoke to Taehon about his and Dai's conversation and said that he thought he hurt the latter's feelings. Shun added that even though he liked Dai, they weren't together yet, and he didn't know if he should have apologized. He later approached Dai and apologized for his actions, which made the latter happy, and the two hugged it out.
In episode 8, Dai and Shun went on a date, and Dai explained that since they couldn't go on a date previously, it was "even more special" to spend time with him. Shun spoke about his past and noted that he was "ashamed" of his past self and wanted to let go of it.
They also shared concerns moving forward. Shun noted that while on The Boyfriend, they saw each other every day, but he was worried about what would happen to them after the show. Since this was a concern they both shared, they decided to discuss it and fans might see a resolution in the finale episode of The Boyfriend.
As they got into bed later, Dai and Shun cuddled and kissed one another, making things official.
Tune in on July 30, 2024, to watch what happens next with Shun and Dai on The Boyfriend, exclusively on Netflix.
