The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras premiered on 14 August at 8 pm ET/PT on MTV and Paramount+. The 40th season features both old and fresh contestants (competing in a group of 4 called 'Eras'), vying for the prize of $1 million.

The synopsis of the show reads:

“The path to glory is far from easy, as they must first compete at the Era Invitational and eliminate the weakest links from within their own Challenge Era, for only the best will earn a coveted spot on their team. With relentless, new challenges and twists, these seasoned Veterans are perpetually kept on their toes in the game they thought they had mastered."

The show host TJ Lavin introduced various twists and turns to the competitors. Moreover, MTV also released a special titled The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras: Countdown Begins on August 7, which showcased a sneak peek of the latest season.

What happened in The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras episode 1?

Episode 1 of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras introduced the audience to the show's largest cast yet. TJ explained that the teammates of an Era (group) would not compete against other teams but within themselves first. He added that the Era Invitational would see 16 people going to the elimination with only 8 surviving out of them.

The name of the first challenge was “Light it up” in which contestants had to complete a puzzle showcasing "40." Then, they had to run towards a boat to paddle their way through the lake consisting of 4 different colors of buoys, representing each era. The contestants had to gather 10 lights from the buoys and paddle back to plug the lights in the cradle.

The host further told the cast that the first contestant to finish from each era would be deemed safe. In contrast, the contestant to finish last would face an opponent chosen by the winners in the elimination round of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.

The challenge saw Laurel Stucky from Era 2 take an early lead as she finished the puzzle and headed to collect the light in the boat, while everyone else was still finishing their puzzles. With an early lead, Laurel eventually completed the race in first place. Cara Maria finished second ahead of 38 other contestants, but still wasn't safe because she belonged to the same era as Laurel.

The eventual winners of the challenge were:

  • Era 1: CT and Rachel
  • Era 2: Bananas and Laurel
  • Era 3: Cory and Tori
  • Era 4: Horacio and Michele

On the other hand, the losers from the challenge were:

  • Era 1: Mark and Katie
  • Era 2: Ryan and KellyAnne
  • Era 3: Leroy and Nia
  • Era 4: Theo and Nurys

As the challengers headed back to the house of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras, the losers started pitching to the winners as the latter had to decide their opponents. Derek was stuck between Laurel and Ryan as he shared a bond with both of them, while Ryan claimed she was "poison."

Amanda Garcia was shown expressing her concerns regarding Tori as she felt Tori would give her a tough opponent on purpose like Nia. Horacio discussed with his girlfriend, Nurys, about who she could take on the challenge. After much discussion, the names of Jenny and Olivia came up as the couple thought they were easy targets.

CT and Derrick from Era 1 tried to figure out who would be the best option to put up against Mark. Between himself, Darrell, and Brad, Derrick suggested Darrell's name as he finished fourth in the challenge. Rachel was also stuck in a dilemma when she had to choose between Aneesa, Jodi, and Tina as they claimed to be friends.

All the teams came together in the chambers to finally decide who would go against the losing participants in the elimination round. Thus, the audience was left on a cliffhanger by the end of episode 1 of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.
