The Great British Bake Off series 15 recently released episode 3, which saw 12 amateur bakers trying to become the next champion baker. Another baker was eliminated in the episode after the double elimination night from last week.
While the cast said goodbye to Hazel and Jeff, the third week saw contestants follow the theme of Bread. In the signature bake challenge, they were instructed to make savory buns. Then, in the technical challenge, they had to make a seven-strand plaited wreath. The last and the most important challenge of all was the showstopper which decided who ultimately was eliminated.
The summary of the episode as per Channel 4 reads:
"It is Bread Week and the bakers take on a savory challenge, and they must follow along as `Breadfather' Paul Hollywood demonstrates the bake. The bakers create horns of plenty and fill them with delectable delights."
Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood have returned as the beloved judges who guide the bakers and rate their creations. Noel Fielding also returned as the host with Alison Hammond, who is hosting The Great British Bake Off for a second year running.
What happened in The Great British Bake Off series 15 episode 3?
Bread Week started with judges instructing the amateur bakers to bake 12 identical savory buns for their signature bake challenge. Paul emphasized that they were looking for "good structure, nice stretchy dough, and good flavor".
Prue explained that bakers can be as creative as they want to be but ultimately they want to taste a good piece of bread by the end of it.
The bakers of The Great British Bake Off soon got to baking, as John baked ‘Yamas!’ Savory Buns. Paul was disappointed by the results due to the large steam pockets and dry textures. Illyin made Jamaican Brown Chicken Savory Buns, which the judges loved, despite being about the chili at first.
Christiaan baked Mushroom & Sage Savory Buns, which had the judges going for more, while Georgie's ‘Pesto Brunch’ Savory Buns couldn't please the judges as much, with Paul notifying her that it needed some parmesan.
Nelly's ‘Ethnic Harmony’ Savory Buns were pleasantly light according to the judges and matched it up with a punchy dipping sauce.
Sumayah baked ‘Sunflower’ Savory Buns which failed to impress the judges on The Great British Bake Off. Mike was praised for his baking when he made ‘Baa-o’ Savory Buns, with Paul complimenting the filling. However, Prue noticed a lack of cumin. Andy's ‘Maisie’s Mini Salami’ Savoury Buns were also highly praised.
Dylan made Gochujang & Garlic Savoury Buns which got him the pleasure of the famed Paul Hollywood handshake on The Great British Bake Off. Gill's Bury Black Pudding Savoury Buns also impressed the judges for its flavors and softness.
The creators of the show added some twists and turns, with Paul demonstrating the technical challenge live, which was unlike anything that had come before. Bakers were given a quick demo and a list of ingredients and asked to make seven-strand plaited wreaths.
The following were the results of the surprise challenge:
- Nelly
- Sumayah
- Andy
- Illyin
- Gill
- Mike
- Georgie
- Christiaan
- John
- Dylan
The bakers were not allowed any respite from the constant barrage of challenges as the showstopper challenge loomed. This would determine who would go home and who would stay to fight another day at The Great British Bake Off.
The bakers had to create a huge cornucopia display which must include a horn-shaped sculpture with two different types of bread.
Here is what the 10 bakers came up with:
- John: ‘Horn of Pride’ Cornucopia
- Illyin: Bread Cornucopia
- Christiaan: ‘Wildflower Delights’
- Georgie: ‘My Favourite Things’ Cornucopia
- Nelly: Cornucopia
- Sumayah: ‘Friendship & Family’ Cornucopia
- Mike: ‘Zeus’s Horn’ Cornucopia
- Andy: ‘New York, Neeeeeew York!’ Cornucopia
- Dylan: ‘Cat’ Cornucopia
- Gill: ‘All Day Holiday’ Cornucopia
Dylan did a complete 180 from the technical challenge and became the star baker after impressing the judges with his flavors and aesthetics. This meant that the baker who went home this week was John, who failed to receive praise in any of the three challenges.
"It was expected. I’ve just had a bad week... when you drop the ball, it’s your time to go. The tears are tears of pride," stated John.
The fourth week of The Great British Bake Off will see the bakers deal with the theme of Caramel. The next episode will be released on October 15 in the UK on Channel 4 and on October 18 for the US audience on Netflix.
