Episode 6 of The Great British Bake Off series 15 premiered on October 29, 2024. The episode saw seven amateur bakers trying to impress the judges through their baked creations, and one baker was eliminated from the running to become the next champion baker.
Last week's theme was Pastry Week, and Andy was voted out due to his toffee podium crumbling in front of his eyes.
In the latest episode, bakers were instructed to bake a sweet autumnal pie as their signature bake, parkin in the technical challenge, and an autumn festival cake as their showstoppers. Sumayah's bakes impressed the judges, and she picked the second Star Baker award this season— having won it the first time after Biscuit Week— while another contestant departed by the end of it.
Noel Fielding welcomed Alison Hammond, who returned to The Great British Bake Off for a second year. Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith also returned as judges, who shared their expertise with the bakers and rated their creations.
What happened in The Great British Bake Off series 15 episode 6?
The episode of The Great British Bake Off started off with the bakers having to bake a comforting sweet autumnal pie. Paul hinted that he was looking for seasonal spices to be balanced with delicate flavors.
Nelly baked an 'Out in Nature' pie which featured apple and poppy seeds, while last week's star baker, Gill, impressed the judges with her blackberry and apple ‘Windy Day’ pie. Dylan cooked up an Autumnal Apple Pie in which the filling was tasty but Prue found the exterior "just a bit tough" by Paul.
Illiyin's Autumnal Fruit Pie was also disappointing as the pastry was raw, while Christiaan's Forest Cano-pie impressed the judges with its taste and appearance. Both Georgie and Sumayah's creations were deemed too spicy. Georgie baked Pumpkin and Pecan Pie and Sumayah made Butternut and Pecan Pie.
Next up was the Technical Challenge, which was designed by Prue. The bakers had to make a vegan parkin this week, a dish traditionally served at bonfire nights. The use of eggs was prohibited since the cake was supposed to be vegan, which could prolong the bake time.
Here's how the judges rated the bakers on The Great British Bake Off:
- Illiyin
- Georgie
- Sumayah
- Dylan
- Nelly
- Christiaan
- Gill
For the final challenge of the week, the bakers had to make an Autumn Festival Cake. The bakers were spurred to add vegetables like carrots, beetroot, and spinach to their bakes.
- Christiaan cooked up ‘Roots of Samhain’ Cake
- Nelly baked ‘Woman in Autumn’ Cake
- Illiyin made Day of the Dead Cake
- Gill baked Bonfire ‘Parrot’ Cake
- Georgie's bake was named ‘Tree Trunk Scene’ Cake
- Sumayah made ‘Autumn Leaves’ Harvest Cake
- Dylan came up with Diwali Cake
Dylan dropped his cake once and had to bake it again. He managed to survive due to the strong flavors of orange and beetroot. Sumayah clinched the coveted Star Baker title for the second time, following an impressive performance in the tent.
Last week's winner, Gill, had been touted by Paul as a surprise contender and a dark horse. Although she narrowly missed out on repeating her victory this week, her strong performance solidified her status as a formidable underdog.
Nelly bid farewell to The Great British Bake Off tent this week. She remarked that making it past "round three was a bonus," and expressed gratitude for her journey. Next week, the bakers will have to follow the theme of Dessert Week where they will tackle meringue nests, steamed suet puddings, and a beloved Italian dessert, tiramisu.
The next episode of The Great British Bake Off will air on November 5, 2024, on Channel 4 in the UK, and on November 8, 2024, in the US.
