Season 12 of The Masked Singer, the celebrity singing competition where contestants perform in elaborate costumes while their identities remain hidden, continued with its quarterfinal episode on December 4, 2024.

The previous episode saw performances as the Group B contestants competed for a spot in the quarterfinals, with Goo narrowly advancing after being saved by judge Jenny McCarthy during “’60s Night.”

This week, the competition intensified with a new elimination format and poignant moments as the contestants—Strawberry Shortcake, Buffalo, Goo, and Wasp—fought for a spot in the semifinals. After a series of votes and performances, Goo was revealed to be NFL player Kobie Turner and was eliminated from the competition.

Goo Revealed as NFL Star Kobie Turner

After The Masked Singer evening's performances, the first round of voting advanced Wasp and Buffalo to the semifinals. This left Goo and Strawberry Shortcake to compete in the newly introduced smackdown round.

Goo performed “Hold On, I’m Comin’” by Sam & Dave, while Strawberry Shortcake sang “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara. Despite a strong vocal showing by Goo, the final vote sent Strawberry Shortcake to the semifinals, ending Goo’s journey.

The Masked Singer contestant Goo was revealed as Kobie Turner, a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. Turner, known for his musical talents in addition to his football career, has led acappella groups and performed the national anthem at major sporting events.

Who is Kobie Turner?

Kobie Turner, born on April 26, 1999, is a professional football player for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL. Turner began his football career at Centreville High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, and later played college football at the University of Richmond and Wake Forest University.

At Richmond, Turner earned accolades as the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and recorded 158 tackles and 15 sacks during his tenure. He transferred to Wake Forest in 2022 and continued to impress scouts with his performance.

In the 2023 NFL Draft, Turner was selected by the Rams in the third round as the 89th overall pick. During his rookie season, he led all NFL rookie defensive players with nine sacks and earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for December. By the end of the season, he was named to the PFWA NFL All-Rookie Team and finished third in the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Beyond football, Turner is known for his musical talents, particularly his singing ability. He directed three a cappella groups during high school, earning the nickname "The Conductor," and has performed the national anthem at major sporting events, including Los Angeles Lakers and Kings games.

Performances of the Quarterfinals and the new format

The Masked Singer quarterfinal episode showcased dynamic performances as each contestant vied for a spot in the semifinals.

  • Wasp opened the night with a vibrant performance of Jungkook's “Standing Next to You".
  • Goo followed, delivering a rendition of “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls.
  • Strawberry Shortcake performed “Closer” by Tegan and Sara.
  • Buffalo closed out the initial round with “You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain.

The special segment of phone calls from loved ones added emotional depth, offering clues and insights into the contestants' identities.

With Goo out of the competition on The Masked Singer, the semifinalists—Strawberry Shortcake, Buffalo, and Wasp—advance to vie for a place in the finals. The season is set to conclude on December 18, 2024, as one of the three remaining contestants will claim the Golden Mask Trophy.
