CBS is set to release a new music competition titled The Road in the fall of 2025. The Voice judge Blake Shelton and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan are the creators of the upcoming show. It will follow an undisclosed headlining superstar as they travel the US, looking for the industry's next big star.

Aspiring artists will join the headliner as opening acts, vying for fan support in each city to remain part of the tour. The Road promises a behind-the-scenes look into the life of a touring artist, showing the challenges and triumphs as performers work to establish themselves. The show will deliver an insider's view into the world of touring musicians while showcasing new talents in a unique, competitive format.

A detailedlook at CBS's upcoming singing competition The Road

The Road will blend elements of a singing competition with a tour documentary, following aspiring musicians on a national tour with an as-yet-unnamed superstar. Participants will perform as opening acts across various US cities, attempting to win the support of local audiences to keep their place on the tour.

Each stop represents an opportunity for contestants to showcase their skills and connect with a new crowd, giving them exposure and a chance to gain momentum.

The competition format adds a unique twist, as singers will need to "win over the local fanbase to secure a spot in the next city," according to CBS’ description. This structure requires contestants to not only impress the superstar headliner but also win the hearts of new fans each night. It sets up a demanding but exciting challenge that combines live performance pressure with fan-driven support.

Beyond the onstage performances, the show will offer an intimate view into the music industry, showing the grueling demands of life on tour. It will grant exclusive access to the touring process, capturing the daily realities of living on a tour bus, managing a packed schedule, and performing in different cities each night.

According to CBS, the show will reveal,

"What happens when some of the best up-and-coming performers pile into a tour bus and tackle a grueling schedule in pursuit of their dreams."

This documentary-style approach distinguishes The Road from other music competition shows, where contestants perform before large studio audiences. Instead, the tour bus and the road become central elements of the series, with contestants adapting to both the excitement and hardship that come with a national tour.

Blake Shelton, a former judge on The Voice, expressed his excitement about creating a new platform for aspiring artists with Taylor Sheridan. Shelton stated that he was a "big fan of Taylor's incredible work." He added that he looked forward to working with his longtime collaborator, Lee, as well as Sheridan.

"I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent and giving them this platform," he said.

Sheridan, known for creating popular series like Yellowstone, 1883, and Tulsa King, emphasized the significance of the project within the country music world.

“There is a revolution taking place in country music. Building a platform with Blake for the next leaders of that revolution is an incredibly exciting venture,” Taylor said.

Sheridan highlighted the raw and authentic nature of the show, noting that unlike many music shows with "shiny floors and studio audiences," The Road will focus on the realities of touring.

“Get in the van, go to the next town, and win the crowd. Do it enough, and you become the next leader. Simple as that.”

MTV Entertainment Studios has partnered with David Glasser's 101 Studios and Shelton's Lucky Horshoe Productions to produce The Road. The show will be airing on CBS, which already has an extensive portfolio of reality shows like Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother.

Meanwhile, David Glasser, a seasoned producer, called the project "a true labor of love" and expressed gratitude for CBS’s support in bringing the show to life.

Though The Road does not yet have an official premiere date, it is scheduled to be released sometime in the fall of 2025. The timing positions the series to reach audiences at a time when viewers are familiar with fall television lineups and are ready for new content.

The Road may appeal to fans of both reality competitions and the growing trend of behind-the-scenes, documentary-style shows. The wait until 2025 will allow the creators time to select a suitable headlining superstar.

The Road will premiere on CBS in the fall of 2025 and will show the journey of aspiring musicians as they compete in multiple cities across the nation.
