3 key takeaways from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives trailer
1) Start of the #momtalk and breaking the norms
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives trailer starts with Mikayla Matthews saying that she loves the Mormon church but there are a lot of rules that they have to follow.
Mikayla is joined by her cast mate Taylor Frankie Paul and the two talk about getting married at a young age, having children, and being taught to be a perfect Mormon wife. They say that they were raised to be housewives for the men and serve their desires.
Taylor was done following the rules and wanted to do what she wanted. She created #momtok where a group of Mormon moms make Tiktoks. It started with Whitney, Mayci, Mikayla, and her but then took off after people started showing support.
They are "breaking the norms" and "trying to change the stigma of gender roles in the Mormon culture". This is followed by one of the husbands letting the viewers know that there are rules in the church for a reason, and the Mormon moms doing their things scares him a lot.
This is followed by Jessi saying that she just wanted to provide for her family, and the group being proud that all of them are currently the breadwinners of their house.
2) Mormon wives soft-swinging scandal
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives will document the infamous "soft swinging" scandal that blew up the internet. Their popularity skyrocketed with the #momtalk, gathering two million followers and nine million views. However, soon a scandal broke out which alleged that the group would swing with each other.
The trailer shows a clip of Taylor clarifying about the swinging incident on her Instagram Live. She says that "no one was innocent and everyone hooked up with everyone" and the group was involved in "soft swinging".
The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Cast member Demi Engemann explained that "soft swinging" took place by "swapping in front of each other, standing next to each other".
3) Clash with the husbands and within the group
The soft swinging led to the fight for #momtalk and the drama being with the husbands. The husbands groups in the trailer and in another clip, one of them can be seen saying to their partner "You can't keep doing this to us."
Jennifer Affleck has a conversation with her husband Zac in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives trailer and lets him know that the group is important to her. To this, Zac gives her an ultimatum to choose between him and the group. He says:
"Being divorced and taking care of two kids would be kind of tough so you make the decision."
Demi thinks that the husbands are stuck in a different era and it's breaking the group apart. However, there are problems within the group as well regarding religion, drinking, and more.
"Online it looks like we’re all the bestest of friends, but we’re not," Whitney Leavitt says.
