What happened in The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On Season 3 Episode 5?
The episode began with Sandy and J.R. having a deep conversation about the impact of social media on marriage. J.R., who discovered that his ex-wife had cheated on him after going through her phone, stated that he tried his best not to know what his partner did on her social media platforms. Sandy encouraged him to let go of his trauma and live in the present.
In one episode segment, Zaina introduced Scotty to her sister, Hannah, and friends, Belen and Jarrad. When asked what attracted him to Zaina, Scotty explained that Zaina had a different life experience and maturity level which was lacking in his relationship with Aria.
However, Hannah mentioned that she still preferred Zaina's relationship with J.R. Hearing that, Zaina protested, admitting she was unsure and might even leave the experiment single.
Meanwhile, Aria and Caleb grew closer as they opened up about their feelings for each other. Aria confessed that she trusted The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On star although they had recently met. She added that although the physical connection came much later, she was happy with the "unique emotional connection" they had established.
In another episode segment, J.R. met Sandy's family and detailed his compatibility with her. The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On star mentioned that they talked for hours and connected on many levels. Sandy expressed a similar sentiment, crediting J.R. for being mentally grounded and vulnerable with her.
Things quickly changed after Sandy's original partner, Nick, discovered that J.R. met her family.
"I found out that J.R. had met Sandy's mom, and that rocked me," he said.
The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On star immediately called Sandy, professing his love to her, and admitting that he was scared. Nick felt threatened by J.R.'s presence and wondered if Sandy was punishing her. He went to her room but was rejected entry by J.R. After a heated altercation, Nick was forced to leave, while Sandy blocked his number. Nick returned to his room and wept.
Meanwhile, Caleb and Aria discussed how intimate their gestures were. As they grew closer, Caleb realized he had developed a strong emotional connection with Aria. Although his priority was remaining loyal to Mariah, he felt "confused" by his newfound spark with Aria.
Dynamics changed between Scotty and Zaina after they disagreed on date ideas. Scotty felt rejected when Zaina refused to go on a hot air balloon ride or experience a cryotherapy session.
"I'm just really confused by this last conversation," Zaina said.
Mariah and Nick expressed how uncomfortable and unhappy they were without their partners. The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On cast members admitted that they felt insecure and vulnerable imagining their partners going on dates with other people. Mariah confessed it was "not fun anymore." Each of them counted the days until their trial marriage was over.
Aria wanted to tell Mariah about her emotional connection with Caleb. However, Caleb was not keen on the idea. He preferred calling their connection a friendship, unwilling to hurt Mariah who was going through the experience alone.
"I don't know if he feels guilt, or what he's going through, but I don't think he's being honest with himself or Mariah," Aria said.
Later, the men and women separated for a night out. When the women reunited, they reflected on their experiences so far. Sandy complained about Nick's outburst, expressing how disrespected she felt. At that point, Mariah added that Nick felt triggered and delved into art to distract himself. The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On star also opined that Nick would not make a "good husband."
At the men's mixer, Nick apologized to J.R. and said he got emotional because he could see Sandy bonding with him. Although J.R. cherished the connection he had with Sandy, he felt conflicted without Zaina by his side. Meanwhile, Sandy pulled Zaina aside and motivated her to prioritize her feelings over J.R.'s perception of a relationship.
"If you really are like, 'It is marriage or we break up,' then stick to that," she said.
Caleb and Scotty clashed when the former revealed he was not interested in romantically pursuing Aria. When The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On star mentioned their connection was a friendship, Scotty stated that he had never met a man who just wanted to be Aria's "friend" after meeting her.
While speaking to Mariah, Aria mentioned that she felt heard and had developed a comfortable relationship with Caleb. They laughed together and enjoyed each other's company. It worried Mariah who confessed that it was "nerve-wracking" to think Caleb emotionally connected with someone other than her.
Later, tensions ran high when J.R. questioned Scotty for spreading rumors about him.
"There's rumors going around saying that I was only here for a hall pass," J.R. said.
Scotty dismissed the allegation, saying he would never intentionally try to cast doubt in Zaina's mind to keep her from reuniting with J.R.
Towards the end of the episode, Nick asked J.R. if he was sleeping with Sandy. When J.R. avoided answering his question, Nick said it confirmed all his worst fears.
