Sister Wives is a long-running TLC reality show that follows Kody Brown's complicated life with his wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn. Since the show's inception in 2010, the show has followed the ups and downs of Kody's relationships with his wives and the emotional toll that having multiple marriages can take.
In recent seasons, the show has focused more on Kody's relationship issues, as three of his four wives, Christine, Janelle, and Meri, decided to end their marriages with him.
In the October 20 episode, Kody visited Meri to discuss her decision to officially terminate their 32-year spiritual marriage.
While Kody claimed that they mutually agreed to part ways and move forward together, Meri quickly shut down this idea. She firmly responded:
"There’s no moving forward together," emphasizing that their relationship was over.
Meri reflects on broken promises in Sister Wives
Meri Brown has been candid in the show Sister Wives about the difficulties she has experienced in her long-term relationship with Kody and how their relationship changed over time. Kody gave Meri hope for a new start after they moved to Flagstaff in 2018. He said:
"When we move to Flagstaff, this will be a good time to have a new beginning for us."
That promise, however, never came true. In a recent episode, Meri said that Kody had been sending her these mixed messages for years, which made her think that they could still fix their marriage.
Meri was frustrated by her feelings going up and down all the time. When she thinks back, she realizes that Kody's poor communication was a big problem in their relationship.
"Why would I do this? I would not court and date her now," he confessed.
Meri shared that Kody’s actions never aligned with his words. He led her to believe that they would work on their marriage while emotionally distancing himself.
Kody, for his part, admitted to feeling conflicted about working on their relationship, ultimately questioning why he should continue.
Kody’s reluctance to let go in Sister Wives
Meri decided to end their spiritual marriage, but Kody wasn't sure if he wanted to. Even though they had grown emotionally distant from each other, he didn't want to end their relationship officially.
In a recent episode of Sister Wives, Kody said that he had emotionally disconnected from the marriage a long time ago but was afraid to start the divorce process himself.
He said his main worries were about how Meri would react and how that might affect his standing in their religious community.
Kody seemed to think that Meri hadn't been completely loyal to him during their marriage, which made him even less likely to go through with an official separation.
He seemed to have let her take the first step towards ending the relationship because he was worried about how she would represent him after the breakup.
Meri, on the other hand, saw this as a form of manipulation because she thought Kody wanted her to leave so he wouldn't have to deal with ending the marriage.
The long-standing emotional distance and unspoken tensions between them eventually led to their decision to separate, as seen in the episodes of Sister Wives.
Fans can watch the new episodes of Sister Wives airing every Sunday at 10 pm ET/PT on TLC.
