Bobby Berk, one of the stars of Queer Eye, has revealed that despite his love for dancing, he has no plans of joining Dancing With the Stars (DWTS).
During an interview with Us Weekly, at ChainFEST LA, on October 7, 2024, Berk, 43, opened up about why he continues to turn down the opportunity from DWTS, citing playful but lasting comments from his co-stars.
“They’ve been trying for years, and I say no because Jonathan [Van Ness] and Karamo [Brown] made me feel like I was a horrible dancer for the last nine years,” Berk shared.
Berk explained that although others told him he was a good dancer, the teasing from Van Ness and Brown over the years made him second-guess his skills.
“People told me I was a good dancer, but they always made fun of me and Antoni [Porowski],” he continued.
This ongoing banter, particularly about rhythm, has stuck with Berk.
“I’ll always hear Jonathan and Karamo in the back of my head being like, ‘Girl. You have no rhythm,’”, he added, noting that these comments are a key reason why he avoids DWTS.
Despite DWTS having approached him multiple times, Berk remains focused on other endeavors, as his career continues to evolve beyond Queer Eye.
Who is Queer Eye's Bobby Berk? His reality TV career, beyond DWTS
Bobby Berk, who starred in the Netflix series Queer Eye from 2018 to 2024, is well-known for his expertise in interior designing. Berk became a popular favorite throughout nine seasons, thanks to his skill in designing and his ability to completely renovate a living environment. His background, however, extends far beyond Queer Eye.
Raised in Missouri after being born in Houston, Texas, Berk faced both internal and external challenges as a homosexual child growing up in a conservative community.
After moving out of his family at the age of 15, he held a variety of jobs, such as those at MCI Communications and Applebee's, before eventually breaking into the design industry. In 2006, he launched his own business, Bobby Berk Home, and later established Bobby Berk Interiors + Design, with a focus on high-end interior design services.
His success in the design industry led to appearances on television networks such as HGTV and NBC, long before his Queer Eye fame. Beyond TV, Berk has continued to build his brand with a line of wallpaper, furniture, and art.
Other projects and life beyond Queer Eye
In November 2023, Berk announced his departure from Queer Eye after seven seasons, explaining that it was time to move on to other things.
“You know I had a really great experience for seven years. And for me, it was just time to move on,” he said in the interview with Us Weekly.
Berk has since focused on his design firm and new television projects. His business, Bobby Berk Interiors + Design, remains a key part of his career as he continues to explore opportunities in scripted television.
Outside of work, Berk has been enjoying life with his husband, Dewey Do, a facial surgeon.
“One of the perks is he’s a facial surgeon. The problem though is that he’s a facial surgeon,” Berk joked, sharing anecdotes about their personal lives.
For now, fans will have to be content seeing him in new creative endeavors, but they shouldn’t expect to see him competing on DWTS any time soon.
