The dynamics of the show

Another layer of complexity is added to the Southern Charm narrative by Albert's relationship with fellow cast member Rodrigo Reyes, who is also part of the LGBTQ+ community. Although both men share a common identity, their relationship is not without its tensions.

Albert emphasized in the interview:

"I mean love some good Southern sweet tea...Just because we’re both a part of this community does not mean we have to be best friends.”

He further explained how the show thrives on the dynamic nature of its friendships, stating:

“I mean I think that's what makes southern charm a great show though. These friendships are constantly moving and evolving.”

He highlighted that this evolving nature of relationships is one of the core aspects that make Southern Charm so compelling.

Ryan Albert as part of the show

As a new cast member of Southern Charm, Ryan Albert has brought to the screen the rarely seen perspective of LGBTQ+ relationships in the South. Being part of the show which represents Albert's marriage with Dr. Eddie Irions, it brings to view the gay couples in the area. According to Albert:

“I really feel like this was an opportunity for viewers to see an inside look at a gay marriage in the South.”

He said that this gives opportunity to the viewers, especially in rural areas, the dynamics of a gay marriage, something Albert hopes rings a bell with those going through similar challenges.

Albert further noted that his parents will get to watch him and his husband for the first time ever on the show. His parents have not digested his marriage, to say the least.

"So it was really important for me going into filming to have that opportunity for the viewers to see us just going about our day-to-day lives and seeing us as a couple and having some very vulnerable conversations,” he said.

Overcoming challenges and gaining strength

Albert's upbringing in a small town with limited exposure to the LGBTQ+ community played a significant role in shaping his experience. He mentioned:

“Growing up in a small town, I didn’t get a lot of exposure to the queer community. The only place I saw these things happened to be on television.”

Despite these challenges, Albert shared that his resilience has grown stronger over time. Reflecting on his journey, he noted:

“There’s nothing that really scares me anymore.”

He explained that his experiences of navigating adversity have contributed to his personal growth, helping him approach life with greater confidence.
