Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 premiered on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. A popular documentary series that featured various types of criminal cases, released five episodes, each delving into the gruesome details of different crimes.
Episode 2 of Unsolved Mysteries revisited the death of Amanda Antoni, a Calgary resident who was found dead in the basement of her home by her husband, Lee Antoni. Due to the amount of blood that covered the scene, investigators remembered the case as one of the goriest cases they had ever come across.
Since Lee was the person who alerted the police after discovering Amanda's body, he became their first and primary suspect. However, as they progressed with their investigation, they found evidence that proved Lee's innocence.
Despite handling Amanda's death for a significant amount of time, police were unable to find solid evidence to determine if her case was an assault, an act of revenge, or an accident. In the end, they called it an "inactive" case.
Unsolved Mysteries episode 2: Lee Antoni called 911 and said Amanda's body was "cold"
On Monday, October 26, 2015, Lee Antoni returned home, and went into the basement of his house, looking for his wife. As he went downstairs, he noticed Amanda lying in a pool of blood, lifeless.
He dialed 911 and sought immediate help. When the person on the phone asked Lee what happened, he said:
"I don't know. I just came home and I found my wife downstairs and there's blood everywhere. Oh my God."
When Lee was asked to check if Amanda was breathing, he checked and replied, "No, she's cold." His voice trembled as he narrated what he saw. Sergeant Trent Peterson was the patrol supervisor on the day Amanda's death was called in.
As he reached the scene, he saw a "visibly upset" Lee, who was "shaking." Sgt. Peterson assigned another police officer to look over Lee since he was unsure about his connection with the case.
In a segment of the Unsolved Mysteries episode, Amanda's foster family, mother Linda, and brothers Darrell and Allen recalled the moment they received news of Amanda's death. When asked about her relationship with her husband, Lee, the brothers claimed that although she was happy with him, they often argued.
"When they first met, Lee had a little bit of a wild side to him. Um, a little more partying, and...and...and that type of stuff," said Darrell.
He added that Amanda approached him a few times to discuss the challenges in her relationship with Lee. Amanda had to start her own business to manage the finances of her household.
"She was always having to look after a lot of the bills, things like that, when Lee was in between jobs," said Darrell.
Amanda's brothers confessed in Unsolved Mysteries they were suspicious of Lee. Although they believed that he loved her, they struggled to trust him completely.
"The husband is the blinking light when the wife has been found dead. He was the person who found Amanda deceased and was central to trying to figure out who's responsible for her death," said an investigator.
The police noticed that Lee presented himself as the "distraught, despondent" husband after questioning him. Lee claimed he left his residence on Friday to help his mother in Saskatchewan and returned the following Monday to find his wife dead.
While revisiting the details of the Unsolved Mysteries case, the investigators mentioned that they were immediately suspicious of Lee when he said he rarely spent time away from his wife.
"And so, for him to go away on this one weekend, what is the statistical probability this would happen the one weekend he goes away?" said an investigator.
When asked if he was involved in Amanda's death, he denied it. To find out if Lee was telling the truth, two investigators were sent on the route Lee took to visit his mother to gather evidence. They dismissed Lee as a suspect when they found video evidence that proved his claims were correct.
While recalling the investigation for Unsolved Mysteries, Lee stated he was not worried when the police suspected him because he was sure about his intentions.
"They were doing their job, and it's always the spouse. Always first. And I get that. I was fine with that," said Lee.
The investigators moved on to analyze other potential angles to figure out who was responsible for Amanda's death.
Episodes 1-5 of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 4 are streaming on Netflix.
