Married to Medicine's Dr. Heavenly Kimes spoke to Bravo's Daily Dish where she spoke about her over two decade-long marriage to Dr. Damon Kimes. The interview, posted on January 1, 2025, saw Dr. Heavenly recall their early years together as she noted the challenges they faced as a young couple. The Married To Medicine stars met and started dating during their time at Meharry Medical College.
In the segment of Daily Dish, she spoke about her and Dr. Damon's engagement and how he surprised her with a ring despite facing financial issues. The reality star said that before they got engaged, she and Dr. Damon had been dating for over three years.
"We had been dating about three and a half years. Everybody who knew me knew him, and we were inseparable," she noted.
Dr. Heavenly said that when Dr. Damon first proposed to her he didn't have a ring because they didn't have a lot of money at the time. She also added that she was five months pregnant and was worried about the engagement ring options. She recalled thinking that her now-husband couldn't give her a "rubber band or whatever."
However, the Married to Medicine star was surprised when Dr. Damon gave her a diamond ring after working an extra job. She said that the couple has "been in marital bliss ever since."
It is worth noting that since then, Dr. Heavenly got her ring upgraded but the original one still holds a special place in her heart. According to her Daily Dish interview, she had it converted into a necklace, which she keeps as a symbol of their journey.
Married to Medicine star Damon's proposal during challenging times
Married to Medicine stars, Dr. Heavenly Kimes and Dr. Damon Kimes’ relationship began when they were students at Meharry Medical College. Heavenly recalled how they were "inseparable" from the start and formed a connection that only grew stronger over time.
She added that despite their love, Damon’s initial proposal came without a ring due to their financial struggles. She recalled her thoughts at the time and said that she knew he couldn't get her a rubber band. However, Dr. Heavenly said that her now-husband took on extra work as a security guard to save money and buy her a diamond ring.
“I was thinking, 'Okay, he can't give me [a] rubber band or whatever!" Some kind of way, that man came out and got me a nice ring," Dr. Heavenly said.
The moment marked a milestone in their relationship, one she remembers as the beginning of their “marital bliss.” Although Dr. Heavenly Kimes was delighted to receive the diamond ring at the time, she later chose to upgrade her jewelry. She explained that the original ring was now part of a necklace, allowing her to keep it close to her heart as a reminder of their early days.
Inside Dr. Heavenly and Dr. Damon Kimes’ marriage
In a 2020 interview with Essence, Heavenly recalled how she and Dr. Damon first met and quickly bonded. Reflecting on their early days at Meharry Medical College, she shared that Dr. Damon was leaving a class early while she had arrived late when they first saw each other.
“She was one of the cool ones and she had an amazing personality. I really gravitated toward her,” Damon said.
In the same interview, the couple reflected on how their love had impacted each other’s lives. Dr. Heavenly shared that before meeting Damon, she had been a straightforward person who didn’t always consider others’ feelings. She explained that Damon had helped her become more mindful of her words, especially in professional settings.
Talking about their marriage, the reality star said that while they "do have ups and downs," she doesn't dwell on them.
Now, as parents to three children—Damon Jr., Zachary, and Alaura—the couple continues to prioritize their family and celebrate milestones together. In July 2020, they marked Damon’s 50th birthday and 23 years of marriage with a celebration in their backyard.
The festivities featured a lot of decorations, including purple and gold balloons, fire pits, and purple lights. Guests received gift bags, and the event included two mermaids in the pool, adding a festive touch to the occasion in Married to Medicine.
