In an interview on December 17, 2024, with Jules Terpak, Mark Cuban, billionaire investor and Shark Tank star, said leadership in the artificial intelligence (AI) race must be secured. Cuban emphasized this point in a statement that underscored the critical nature of AI development for the future of global competitiveness and technological advancement.

"I think we have to win AI, period, no questions," he said.

The Shark Tank investor's fight for AI supremacy is more than innovation; it's about protecting technological infrastructure and strategic alliances in a fast-changing geopolitical landscape. Cuban noted the high-stakes competition for AI dominance, the risk of geopolitical tensions, and the implications of breaking up major tech companies.

Shark Tank Mark Cuban's insights on the battle for AI supremacy

The role of Taiwan semiconductor in AI development

During the interview, Cuban underlined the importance of the role of Taiwan Semiconductor — one of the key suppliers of high-end, next-generation semiconductor chips without which artificial intelligence systems cannot survive. Cuban, with respect to Nvidia's AI products, underscored the significance of Taiwan Semiconductor in the global supply chain:

"They're the most important company in the world and they're based in Taiwan, and if China decides to go across you know the water and attack them or take them over, we're [in trouble]."

Cuban explained that the geopolitical tensions surrounding Taiwan could disrupt the global AI supply chain, creating potential challenges for the development and accessibility of crucial technologies.

The Shark Tank investor emphasized the need for stability in the region to ensure uninterrupted access to these semiconductor technologies, which are integral to maintaining a competitive edge in AI development.

The consequences of breaking up major AI companies

The conversation also addressed the potential breakup of large tech companies, particularly those involved in AI research and development. Cuban explained the possible consequences of such corporate restructuring, saying it could give China an advantage in the AI race.

"If you break up the biggest AI companies, I think by default that puts China ahead."

Cuban clarified that a breakup of companies like Google would result in the company being divided into several separate entities, each with limitations on how they could collaborate. The Shark Tank investor emphasized that these companies could not bypass the restrictions through contracts, making it harder for them to pool resources and sustain large-scale investments in AI.

"As one huge company, they can spend tens of billions of dollars on AI. If you break that up into four companies, each of them can't do it, and so that's a problem."

The importance of ethical oversight and combating AI scams

Cuban also spoke about ethical oversight in AI development, explaining how there are scams and misuse of AI technologies. He narrated how AI tools were misused to dupe vulnerable individuals, mainly elderly people, using fake advertisements. Cuban further described his work with Google on the same issues as follows,

"There were all these scam companies that were using other people's name, image, and likeness to scam old people."

The Shark Tank investor pointed out that he, Google, and Lena were all working together to identify how these scams could be prevented. Cuban spoke about his efforts to assist victims of such scams, especially the elderly, by teaching them how to cancel fraudulent transactions and secure their personal information.

Navigating the political and technological landscape

Cuban's concerns over the future of AI go beyond technological advancements to political dynamics. He talked about possible U.S. responses to global threats, particularly that tariffs may not be the best way to protect AI leadership.

"Trump said he would increase tariffs, but that's not going to work. It's just saying, 'I'm going to make the cost of your soybeans more expensive,' and they don't care about that."

Cuban underscored the complexities of securing AI dominance through technological development and strategic political considerations. The Shark Tank investor highlighted the importance of safeguarding key semiconductor supply chains and maintaining stability in critical regions like Taiwan to ensure continued access to the resources necessary for AI growth.
