Rhythm + Flow: Brazil premiered its debut season on Netflix on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. 18 aspiring musicians participated in the competitive reality show to win the R$ 500,000 prize and a spot on Sintonia Season 5. Each aimed to launch their career in the hip-hop music industry by using the platform provided by Brazil's first musical reality show.
Mentored by Djonga, Tasha & Tracie, and Filipe Ret, the contestants survived the battles round and entered the feats phase to collaborate with well-known musicians from the industry. However, many were eliminated before reaching the feature performances.
One contestant who advanced was Maria Preta. In episode 3, Let's Get This Started! she performed with MC Luanna, singing 44. Filipe Ret complimented her development and said:
"I thought it was really cool to see this growth, this evolution, this other side of yourself. The path ahead of you is very interesting. Well done."
The Rhythm + Flow: Brazil contestant who was at risk of being sent home in the battles round survived elimination and progressed to the next stage of the competition. However, the collaboration round proved difficult for Muse Maya, ending her journey on the show.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil: Maria Preta felt intimidated working with MC Luanna
In Rhythm + Flow: Brazil episode 3, the contestants had to collaborate with renowned singers from the hip-hop industry. They needed to write their verses and align them with the mood and beat of the singers' songs without compromising on the original. Before the contestants left to prepare for the challenge, Filipe Ret gathered them and advised them on how to approach the round.
He urged them to use all their skills to make their verse a "good feature." Since their time on the track would be limited, he suggested that they use several strategies to make their lyrics sound unique.
"Use punchlines, use melody, use spoken rhyme, even use singing. Switch up your flow. If it's only one flow, it gets boring, you know?" Filipe Ret said.
Soon, the judges announced the pairings, coupling Maria Preta with MC Luanna, known for her hit songs like 44, 99 Problems, Karma, and Larga Essa Vida.
Rhythm + Flow: Brazil judge Tasha requested that the contestants utilize the "unique opportunity" to leave a lasting impression on the judges and the audience.
During a confessional, Maria Preta admitted it was an opportunity that did not come easily to all. She added they were "outcasts" who lived "parallel lives in different places." So, for them to have a chance to share the stage with celebrated artists meant something else. However, as a fan of MC Luanna, she was afraid of collaborating with her.
"I am familiar with the work of MC Luanna. I'm nervous to work with someone I'm a fan of. And they might think that my sound has a more aggressive style and all that," she said.
The Rhythm + Flow: Brazil star worried that MC Luanna might have "trouble understanding the vulnerability" in her lyrics. Nonetheless, she was prepared to take on the challenge.
Maria Preta met MC Luanna 12 hours before their performance and discussed her strategy. She admitted she was "happy but emotional" to sit face-to-face with someone she was a fan of.
Maria Preta confessed she could relate to the theme of their song, 44. She recalled when she sent the link to the song to her ex-partner who would not stop contacting her after their breakup. Consequently, it was a "crazy" experience for her to perform the same song with its singer.
The other contestants watched Maria Preta and MC Luanna's performance from the lounge, commending their confidence and onstage chemistry. After the performance concluded, Maria Preta explained she wanted their verses to sound like a conversation. She also switched her flow for the feature to stand out.
Although impressed by her rhyme and attitude, the Rhythm + Flow: Brazil judges felt she needed to rework her diction so her words could be understood. Despite the criticism, Maria Preta evaded elimination and advanced to the next round of competition.
