Richard Goodall, a 55-year-old janitor from Terre Haute, Indiana, was crowned the winner of America's Got Talent (AGT) season 19 on September 24, 2024. Known for his soulful singing, Goodall captivated both the judges and the audience. The prize for the season’s winner was $1 million.

America's Got Talent showcases a wide array of talents from the United States and abroad, featuring acts that range from singing and dancing to comedy and magic. Contestants compete to impress a panel of judges, which this season included Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Sofia Vergara.

Securing a spot in the live finals is a considerable achievement, as participants vie for public votes to ultimately become the AGT champion and claim the $1 million cash prize.

Winning America's Got Talent season 19

The final night of AGT Season 19 was quite spectacular. Goodall, who had earned one of Heidi Klum’s Golden Buzzers, performed Don’t Stop Believin’ with members of Journey, bringing his musical journey full circle. His victory not only included the $1 million prize but also a personal milestone, as he publicly announced his recent marriage to his partner, Angie.

Contrary to popular belief, the $1 million prize awarded to AGT winners is not delivered as a lump sum. Winners are given a choice between a financial annuity paid over forty years at approximately $25,000 per year or a lump sum that is significantly reduced after taxes.

Regardless of the payment method chosen, both options are subject to taxation, impacting the final amount received by the winner. This structured payout ensures financial security over a prolonged period, aligning with the show's intent to provide lasting support for the winner’s future endeavors.

Since the third season of AGT, winners have been offered the chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip in addition to the monetary prize. Exceptions to this prize have been made between 2010 and 2013, during which the winning finalist headlined a national tour instead.

Historical significance and evolution of the prize

Since its inception in 2006, America's Got Talent has remained a cornerstone of American reality television. The prize structure has evolved over the years, initially focusing solely on a cash prize. For instance, the first season winner, Bianca Ryan, received a $1 million cash prize.

The fourth season, however, marked a shift. In addition to the cash prize, winners were also awarded the opportunity to headline a 10-week show at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Prominent winners over the years, such as Kevin Skinner (Season 4), Michael Grimm (Season 5), and more recently, Richard Goodall, highlight the diverse talents celebrated on the America's Got Talent stage.

Each winner’s journey post-AGT has been unique, with many capitalizing on their victory to launch successful careers in entertainment, whether through recording contracts, live performances, or extended engagements in Las Vegas.
