The Great British Bake Off season 14 aired exclusively on Channel 4 back in September 2023. In this season, Matt Lucas exited the hit reality TV cooking competition series, and Alison Hammond took his place instead. Alongside Noel Fielding, Matt co-hosted the cooking series.
Season 14 finale episode 10 was released on November 28, 2023, which declared 28-year-old Peterborough native Matty Edgell as the winner. Previously a PE and science teacher at Hampton College, Matty revealed multiple plans after his win. In a July 2024 interview with BBC, The Great British Bake Off season 14 winner shared that he would write a book and start a cake business.
According to his official Instagram account, Edgell introduces himself as "Great British Bake Off Winner 2023" and an "All round foodie and former secret baker." The Great British Bake Off season 14 synopsis mentions that this show tests every participant's baking skills and challenges them to compete till the very end. The series description states:
"Twelve home bakers take part in a 'bake off', which will test every aspect of their baking skills as they battle it out to be crowned the Great British Bake Off's Best Amateur Baker."
What has The Great British Bake Off season 14 winner Matty Edgell been up to?
Since his win, Matty has left his teaching job and is now focusing solely on baking, including partnerships with brands such as Carnations and Nestlé. According to Matty's introduction on Channel 4's September 19, 2023 press release, he is described as his "family’s designated baker." It further states:
"Matty is the type of baker who swats up on online patisserie videos before bed. Now the family’s designated baker, he always has a list of cake requests for upcoming celebrations. He describes his style as rustic but neat, and his flavor preferences as quite traditional – he particularly loves chocolate, citrus, and nuts."
During the interview with the BBC, The Great British Bake Off season 14 winner shared that it was hard for him to juggle baking and teaching, which is why he chose the latter. Matty expressed gratitude for getting multiple opportunities that will help him flourish as a baker in the future. He said,
“I have had loads of 'pinch me' moments. I got to work with West Ham as well, which was pretty cool. I thought my days of seeing myself on Sky Sports - that dream had long gone, but it happened. Bake Off gave me an opportunity to explore an avenue that was so far out of the equation. If I didn't take it, I would forever look back and think what if so?”
Right now, Matty is building his “own brand and cake businesses.” He admitted to wanting to return to reality TV once again, “whether that be a cooking or a baking show.” He also hared his plans to publish a book. He continued:
“I think the next big thing that I've got my eyes on is a book. It's still a work in progress, and I'm hopeful of something coming up soon. I found it fascinating - being inside the TV and seeing how it all comes together was mind blowing.”
He shared he was “apprehensive yet excited” for the new chapter that is about to begin. Matty expressed gratitude to his students and the school staff.
