Meet Desiree Burch, the voice behind Too Hot to Handle

Desiree Burch was born in January 1979. She studied at Yale University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in theater studies. During her time there, she was under the guidance of Deb Margolin, a founding member of the experimental theater group called Split Britches. This helped her polish her skills in stage performances and experimental theatre.

Desiree Burch's work is rooted in a lot of themes. She has also given voice to works that include themes like identity, self-discovery, and social justice, with entertainment being the primary one.

Her solo stage performances, such as the award-winning Tar Baby, explore complex issues of race and minority experiences in America. Through podcasts with experts, Desiree talks about topics like fatphobia, body myths, and the power of self-acceptance.

Desiree Burch was raised in Los Angeles, studied at Yale, and is currently living in London. Her career spans across stand-up comedy, theater, writing, and television. Her recent web series, Profiles in Fatness, addresses issues of body positivity and fat activism, shedding light on societal norms and challenges faced by larger women.

In an interview with The Independent on October 2, 2015, Burch mentioned that her comedy acts are about her life as:

“A big woman, a Black woman, and a woman woman.”

In 2017, Desiree Burch captivated audiences with Unf*ckable, a hit show that depicted her ability to blend humor with societal issues. She also grabbed eyeballs with her 2019 Comedy Central special, Desiree Burch Live.

In an interview for Funny Women on September 25, 2015, she said:

“I had gotten to my mid-30s and hadn’t done anything big and potentially foolish over a boy yet. It seemed about time. Plus, in my forays into performing in the U.K., during Fringe festivals, it seemed like there was much more of a culture for live performance.”

In another conversation with The List on March 29, 2022, she spoke about the differences between comedy in the U.K. and the U.S. She highlighted:

"In the U.K., there is a real economy for comedy in a way that there isn't in the States; doing comedy on the road and having a family life is much more doable because things are closer together. There are a lot of TV and radio jobs for comics here that don't exist in the States."

According to producer Louise Peet of Too Hot to Handle, Desiree Burch was cast as the narrator because her voice was "perfect". Peet told OprahMag.com on April 17, 2020, that the key was to be "warm and non-judgmental" and that's what she brought to the show.

Creative director Laura Gibson also mentioned in the same interview that Burch's reactions were also incorporated into the show's script as "she was almost like another viewer."
