Now that American Idol season 22 is set to conclude soon, each week contestants are competing to secure their spot in the competition, as the remaining are sent home through elimination. Last week, the top 20 contestants performed on the singing stage, out of which six artists were eliminated.
In episode 12, out of the 14 artists, Jordan Anthony and Nya were sent home. Previously, Nya was in the bottom spot and this time, she chose the song I Say a Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin, which the judges felt didn't suit her voice, thus impacting her score negatively. Luke, one of the American Idol judges, appreciated her vocal abilities, but her incorrect song choice didn't showcase her singing ability to the maximum level.
Meanwhile, Jordan Anthony covered Whitney Houston's song, I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me). Even though all three judges, Katy, Lionel, and Luke thought he nailed the performance from "top to finish," Jordan's performance didn't seem to impress audiences.
American Idol season 22 episode 12, titled Top 14 – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was released exclusively on ABC on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 8 pm ET. As per Rotten Tomatoes, the official synopsis states:
"With guidance from guest mentor Gene Simmons, the top 14 take on songs from legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees as America votes live for the top 12; the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees are announced."
American Idol season 22 episode 12 contestants who made it to the Top 12
Triston Harper was the first performer on the American Idol season 22 Top 14 stage, where he sang Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis Presley. Due to his impressive performance, Triston received praise from the three judges, especially Luke, who thought America would "fall in love with that performance."
Next artist, Julia Gagnon, is heading to the next round after she sang Run to You by Whitney Houston. Katy told Julia that her stage presence radiated confidence and her authenticity was visible through her unique twist in the song.
One of the main highlights of American Idol season 22 episode 12 was Roman Collins' cover of You’re All I Need to Get By by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell. Lionel praised his performance, which had a gospel twist to it. The judge noted:
“You were on fire! You made that song your song.”
Another participant still in the competition is Kaibrienne, who sang I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. According to Luke, her performance was hooking and looked more like a concert than an American Idol performance.
Mia Matthews also made it to the Top 12 by singing Those Memories of You by Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris.
Apart from Triston Harper, Julia Gagnon, Roman Collins, Kaibrienne, and Mia Matthews, artists Jayna Elise, Kayko, Emmy Russell, McKenna Faith Breinholt, Jack Blocker, Will Moseley, and Abi Carter will perform during the Billboard #1 Hits Night on season 22 episode 13, set to air on Monday, April 22, 2024, at 8 PM ET exclusively on ABC and the next day on Hulu.
