Netflix's newest dating show, The Boyfriend, concluded on July 30, 2024. The show had a total of 10 episodes, during which the nine contestants lived together in a house by the beach called the Green Room. The Boyfriend is the first-ever Japanese show featuring young men looking for a potential romantic connection.
It ended with two couples getting together, while the remaining housemates graduated from the show as singles. The couples were Dai-Shun and Alan-Kazuto. Contestants who graduated as singles were Taeheon, Gensei, Ryota, Ikuo, and Usak. Of the five remaining contestants, Gensei graduated from the Green Room in the ninth episode, as he decided to leave the show a day earlier.
Gensei confided in fellow housemate Ryota, whom he liked and wanted to build a connection with. After their shift at the Coffee Truck that day, Gensei told Ryota about his plans to leave the Green Room. They had a long conversation while sitting by the sea and enjoyed their time together.
Gensei told Ryota that he believed he saw his "stay in the house" to the end, before confessing about his decision to graduate.
"I think I saw it through to the end. I mean about my stay in the house. And what I wanted to tell you is…I am going to graduate from the Green Room today," the cast member said.
While Ryota was sad about Gensei leaving, he was happy that Gensei had no regrets. Later that day, Gensei shared the news with the rest of the housemates, who were all emotional, and many even had tears in their eyes.
Gensei saying goodbye to Ryota: The Boyfriend episode 9
After their work shift at the Coffee Truck ended in The Boyfriend episode 9, Gensei and Ryota took a walk on the beach before sitting down for a conversation. While they talked about many things, Gensei told Ryota that he would graduate from the Green Room that day and leave the show. Ryota couldn’t believe it, as he thought they might have more time together.
Gensei also told Ryota that he was cool, making him even more attractive. He wanted to support Ryota, so he stayed in the house until the end.
When Ryota asked Gensei whether he had any regrets, Gensei replied, saying that he had no "regrets at all" as he had shared his feelings with his castmate.
"I shared my feelings with you. I didn’t expect any answer from you. I thought it would be nice just to express my thoughts to you. To say what I truly feel. So…do your best. I want you to do your best. And don’t worry, because you’re a catch. You should be proud," Gensei said.
Ryota told Gensei that he was happy they could share their feelings, adding that it meant a lot to him. Hence, saying goodbye to Gensei was sad for Ryota, who went on to say that he would miss Gensei. The two then thanked each other before hugging.
Gensei added that he hadn’t told anyone else in the house about his leaving.
