The new star of the Bravo reality show, The Real Housewives of New York City is Racquel Chevremont, joining Jenna Lyons, Brynn Whitfield, Jessel Taank, Erin Lichy, Ubah Hassan, and Sai De Silva for its fifteenth season. Racquel Chevremont is a Bronx-born art curator, model, and LGBTQIA+ advocate.
Bravo revealed on Thursday, June 27, that Racquel Chevremont, a model turned art curator, is now part of the popular franchise. The 53-year-old, from Brooklyn, raised in the Bronx, is going to be RHONY's full-time Housewife and will therefore be the second queer Housewife.
Chevremont wants to provide more queer visibility on television. In an interview with GLAAD, Racquel stated:
"It’s exciting, I wasn’t sure if they were going to want two queer women on a franchise that has historically been about married heterosexual women. I think it was a bold decision and honestly a more authentic representation of NYC."
"My entire adult life has been about representation and using whatever platform I have to get the voices of queer folks of the diaspora out there," Chevremont told the outlet. "What better way to do so if not as a member of this iconic franchise?"- Racquel added.
Who is RHONY's Racquel Chevremont?
Racquel Chevremont was born and raised in the Bronx, making her a true New Yorker. She is the mother of two kids—a boy, Corey, and a girl, Elle, who are often featured on her Instagram. She's also engaged to Mel, a relationship that blossomed after she and former collaborator Mickalene Thomas ended their engagement in 2022.
Chevremont has been an art consultant for twenty years, working with high-profile clients such as Google and volcanic artists like Dawoud Bey. She has curated several artists for collections in shows like Severance, Empire, and Law & Order: Organized Crime.
Back in 1993, RHONY's Racquel Chevremont was discovered by the photographer Steve Landis while she was working as a model scout. Her stunning work for beauty giants like Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Benetton, L'Oréal, and Elite Models has appeared on billboards worldwide.
Apart from these achievements, she has graced the covers of leading publications like International Elle, causing a storm in the fashion world.
Though Chevremont is openly queer now, as an African American woman she struggled after a late coming out experience.
"I believe that because of my age and my accomplishments, I didn't care what anyone had to say. I didn't feel the need to prove anything to anyone,"
She told GLAAD magazine about overcoming difficulties in her careers in the arts and fashion. One of the organizations co-founded by Chevremont, whose mission embraces social impact, is the Josie Club, which focuses on community gatherings.
It caters only to queer black women under its management. Racquel also uses it to promote the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Racquel Chevremont on Joining RHONY
Racquel mentioned that she was surprised Bravo would choose her alongside another lesbian cast member, Jenna Lyons.
“I think it was a bold decision and honestly a more authentic representation of NYC,” - Racquel added.
She wants to show her viewers how much of a loving family she and her spouse have made. Chevremont also wants to prove that gay women can be good parents within warm relations with their partners and children, unlike some stereotypes might suggest.
