The finale episodes (nine and 10) of Netflix's The Boyfriend aired exclusively on the streaming platform on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. The show is Japan's first-ever dating reality show for same-s*x couples and sees nine young men living together in a beach-front house called the Green Room. Over the course of ten episodes, the men try to bond with each other, form friendships, and find love while discovering themselves.

The ninth episode, which was released on Tuesday, featured many revelations about various cast members and their feelings. The episode also saw Taeheon and Gensei have a deep conversation, with the latter claiming that telling Ryota about his feelings won't make any difference. This was because Ryota liked Kazuto, who was with Alan. Thus, according to Gensei, telling Ryota his feelings would be "counter-productive."

Episode nine saw the rest of the housemates waiting in the Green Room as the couples who went on the sleepover, made their way back. Dai and Shun were the first to return, with Alan and Kazuto coming back to The Boyfriend house soon after.

The episode then saw Taeheon and Gensei sitting by the pool, discussing what Ryota felt about Kazuto and how it affected Gensei's feelings about Ryota. They had a long and deep conversation that the two wanted to have without anyone else around them.

The Boyfriend episode 9: What did Taeheon and Gensei discuss?

When the two couples, Shun-Dai and Kazuto-Alan, returned to the Green Room after their sleepover, all the cast members discussed Shun and Dai's kiss. They also spoke about the "afterglow" the two had.

Following that, Taeheon and Gensei went outside because Taeheon wanted to ask Gensei something. Taeheon started the conversation by saying that he had many questions for Gensei, who said that he could ask him anything.

"When your name and Ryota’s were called out, it seemed to me that you looked pretty happy. But it wasn’t the same kind of happiness that Dai had when his name was called," Taeheon said.

Gensei told Taeheon that he knew that Ryota liked Kazuto and that he had known it for some time. They discussed how Ryota was interested in Kazuto, despite the latter being with Alan. Gensei then said that when Kazuto and Alan came back from the sleepover, Ryota was still thinking about Kazuto.

Taeheon also asked Gensei about his intentions about Ryota, since Gensei liked Ryota and had feelings for him. Gensei said that telling Ryota would "make a difference," adding that it might be counter-productive. He said that he needed space to figure things out before having another conversation with Ryota, as it would be "the best thing" he could do.

He added that he was "trying to figure out what" would bring him happiness and try to understand what made him happy before choosing a path.

"I think if I tell Ryota about the feelings I have for him, I’m not gonna be happy with how it goes. I’m going to think about it for a while, like, tonight," The Boyfriend cast member said.

Upon hearing all that, Taeheon suggested that Gensei shouldn't think too hard about it.

Taeheon shared his confusion: The Boyfriend

Following that, Gensei asked Taeheon how he had been doing. Taeheon said that since they had discussed their coming-out experiences in the previous episode of The Boyfriend, he had been thinking about it. He added that they had given him the courage to come out to his parents.

Taeheon did say that he was still scared about it and didn’t know what he would do. He noted that he wanted to be able to tell his parents but was unsure how to do it. The Boyfriend cast member also said that he had been considering some of the possible ways that his parents might react to him coming out.

Gensei assured his friend that what he was doing wasn't wrong and that telling his parents after the show was done filming would be a good time to do so.

All ten episodes of The Boyfriend are available on Netflix.
