The Shark Tank series has introduced viewers to aspiring entrepreneurs as the investors make an offer to invest in small-scale businesses and new innovative ideas. During Christopher Gray's pitch for the scholarship database company Scholly, in season 6 episode 20, Lori made an offer and asked Gray to take her offer or else she would back out.
This happened after Gray's pitch was interrupted by her; hence, Mark and Robert felt they weren't being given a chance to ask questions about the business model. Robert called out Lori that the show wasn't "Charity Tank" and stated Lori made an offer out of "pity."
Once Gray left, Mark, Robert, and Kevin also got up and exited. As Daymond had made a joint offer with Lori, he stayed back. Meanwhile, Robert said:
“You know what? You’re really pissing me off right now. I’m going to say something rude to you, and I don’t want to say something rude to you, so I’m just going to go. Because there was no need to do something like that. You’re smarter than that.”
What happened between the investors and Scholly's co-founder Christopher Gray on Shark Tank?
During Gray's pitch, Shark Tank investor Lori shared that she was ready to make an offer. At that time Gray's pitch had not been concluded yet, and Cuban, alongside other sharks, wanted to know more about the business model and ask Gray questions about his entrepreneurial journey. Lori explained the reason behind making an offer right away; she said:
“You know what, Christopher? I’m going to do something I’ve never done before. I haven’t heard a whole lot, but I’m going to make you an offer right now. I believe in you. I believe in what you’re doing.”
Upon hearing this, Gray told Lori he wanted to hear what other sharks had to say about his business. Lori, on the other hand, emphasized that she was not going to ask about scaling his business or profit and was looking forward to agreeing to the offer. John decided to join Lori's offer of US$40,000 for 15% equity as he could relate to the kids who didn't have access to higher education.
Towards the end of their interaction, Lori once again emphasized securing a deal with Gray. She asked him to agree to the offer, or she will be out. Soon Gray agreed, but after his exit, the sharks got into a disagreement.
Shark Tank investor Robert called out Lori, stating this wasn't "Charity Tank." Meanwhile, Lori defended her decision that she didn't make an offer out of pity but her passion to help make "America a better place." Daymond joined Lori and mentioned that "pity" was never the main reason behind their offer.
Kevin questioned why the Shark Tank investor wouldn't let Gray talk during his pitch, and Mark also asked why Lori wasn't interested in getting to know more about the business model. Robert said:
“You know, when I had nothing and couldn’t rub two pennies together, you know what I really hated? I hated when people wanted to give me a break because they felt bad for me.”
In an earlier interview with Business Insider in 2014, John spoke about the dynamics of the show and the relationship between the sharks.
“It’s all in the moment. And in the moment, it does get personal here and there. None of it is for the camera. There is real stuff at stake. There’s real money, and there are also real egos.”
Viewers can stream Shark Tank exclusively on ABC and can also follow the sharks on their respective Instagram accounts.
