Following the conclusion of its fourth season, makers of the HBO show announced that there would be no Succession season 5, much to the fans' disappointment. Since then, fans have been scouring the internet for similar content and shows. There are a few shows that fall in the same genre as Succession, many with their plot, storytelling, and characters. These shows can be a good alternative for fans who want to watch shows like Succession.

The first episode of season 1 of Succession was released on June 3, 2018, with its series finale being released on May 28, 2023, after four seasons. Directed and created by Jesse Armstrong for HBO, the show is a satirical dark comedy infused with family drama.

It follows the four Roy siblings whose family controls the biggest media and entertainment company in the world. However, when their father decides to step down from his position at the company, the siblings begin an intense war to take control of the company.

The show received critical acclaim and several accolades in multiple award ceremonies including the Critics Choice Awards and the Primetime Emmys. Succession was praised for the storyline, plot, direction, writing and acting.

After season 4 ended, fans wanted to see Succession season 5 but the creator confirmed that the fourth season was the final season. However, for those who were hoping for Succession season 5, this list has 10 shows that fans can watch after the end of season 4 of the HBO drama.

These shows include Arrested Development, House of Cards, BiIlions, House of Lies, The White Lotus, Yellowstone, Mad Men, Dynasty, The Great, and The Game of Thrones.

10 binge-worthy shows for fans saddened by Succession season 5 renewal news

According to ScreenRant, the show's creator Jesse Armstrong said that the fourth season was the final one for the show. He confirmed that they had no plans to create Succession season 5, which disappointed fans. However, there are some other shows similar to the HBO drama that fans can watch if they miss Succession.

1) Arrested Development

The sitcom Arrested Development might be a good replacement for Succession season 5 as both shows fall under the comedy-drama genre. The two shows also look at the powerplay and dynamics between dysfunctional families that are considered industry giants.

While Succession follows the Roy siblings and their fight to control their father's media company, Arrested Development shows the Bluth family who have lost everything. The Bluths were once a prominent name in the business industry but they have it all taken from them after the family's patriarch is arrested and convicted for fraud.

Following the arrest, the family's oldest son, Michael, needs to work on maintaining peace at their home.

Arrested Development is currently streaming on Disney Plus and Netflix.

2) House of Cards

House of Cards is another show that can fill the gaping hole that not having Succession season 5 has left behind. The characters in House of Cards are just as layered and multidimensional as those in Succession.

House of Cards makes for an engaging and suspenseful watch as it delves into the intricate world of corruption and politics. It follows a Congressman and his wife as they embark on a journey to seek revenge against the people who he thinks have wronged him. Unlike Succession, this show is a political drama that doesn't have as many elements of the family drama.

House of Cards is currently streaming on Netflix.

3) BiIlions

Billions is another show that could be a good replacement for Succession season 5. The show follows the lives of several ambitious people whose only task is to accumulate wealth and rise the ranks in society. The plot may sound familiar to fans of Succession as the latter's plot also follows a similar trajectory.

However, the difference between the shows is the people they follow. While Succession follows the lives of the Roy family, the people and characters in Billions aren't necessarily a part of the same family.

Billions is currently streaming on Disney Plus.

4) House of Lies

Like Succession, House of Lies is also a comedy-drama series that fans can turn to if they are disappointed about Succession season 5. It follows individuals who want to win the game they're playing against people fighting the same fight.

It is the story of management consultants who do everything they can to get powerful CEOs on board and close huge deals before their competitors. It has been described as a "scathing satire" of corporate America by IMDb.

House of Lies is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

5) The White Lotus

Since its release in July 2021, The White Lotus has gained a cult-like following. The show's plot feels a lot like Succession, as deception is a major theme in both shows.

The White Lotus follows guests and employees of The White Lotus Resort over a week and what happens when their dark secrets come out. Described as a dark satire, the show gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of rich people and their hidden dysfunctions.

Fans are currently awaiting the release of the third season The White Lotus, which is due in 2025.

Two seasons of The White Lotus are currently streaming on HBO Max.

6) Yellowstone

Fans who are upset about the non-renewal of Succession season 5 will potentially be interested in the show Yellowstone as well. The latter also chronicles the struggles of a family to claim power.

However, while Succession shows the struggle between family members, Yellowstone shows a family's struggles against people trying to take away their land. It follows the Dutton family, that owns a ranch that is under constant attack from multiple people.

Yellowstone is currently streaming on Netflix.

7) Mad Men

Those who are disappointed about not having Succession season 5 can watch Mad Men to feel better.

The show follows advertising executive Don Draper who is a part of one of New York's top ad agencies. Set in the 1960s, Mad Men looks at Draper, who is a very talented sales executive who will go to great lengths to be successful with secrets from his past threatening his present. This is quite similar to the characters of Succession who were willing to go to any length for success.

Mad Men is currently streaming on Lionsgate Play.

8) Dynasty

Dynasty is another show that fans can fall back on if they were awaiting confirmation of Succession season 5, only to be disappointed.

Much like Succession, the 2017 show Dynasty also follows a wealthy family as they try to control their fortune. It looks at the Carrington family, who own multiple businesses, but are shaken by a sudden familial tragedy.

Like Succession, Dynasty also shows how the family goes into chaos, which unavels the drama and politics in families.

Dynasty is currently streaming on Netflix.

9) The Great

The Great is another show that much like Succession explores turmoil among family members for economic and political gain. The satirical family drama is set in 18th-century Russia and follows Princess Catherine, who is married to the emperor of the country.

The Great chronicles Catherine's rise to power as she tries to alter the authoritarian beliefs and customs of her husband's family. It shows how she has to fight against her enemies, some of whom are members of the family she is married into.

The Great is currently streaming on Hulu.

10) Game of Thrones

Based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy thriller, Game of Thrones had been popular since its release in 2011. However, it was only after watching Succession that fans realized how similar the two shows were.

Game of Thrones follows several families as they try to ascend the Iron Throne, which would let them control the Seven Kingdoms. Like Succession, the HBO series also shows the allure of power and the lengths to which people will go for it.

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are currently streaming on HBO Max.

HBO's Succession left a lasting impression on the minds of people, especially disappointing them by confirming that there will be no Succession season 5. However, these are some of the shows that will give viewers similar, if not the exact same, plotlines and themes.
