1) Black Mirror

For Severance fans, Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror should be a must on their Netflix watchlist.

Spanning over 6 seasons and one movie, Black Mirror explores the horrors of the advancement of technology and how it affects human relationships. Drawing inspiration from various things that are popular on the internet, every episode of Black Mirror explores something different but is connected by one thing - how the advancement of technology may not always be a boon for human society.

While an episode in the first season follows a woman who lives in a society where audiovisual technology is installed in everybody's brain, allowing them to rewatch and relive their memories, an episode in the latest season follows another woman who watches her own being mirrored real-time into a TV show in a fictional streaming service, Streamberry.

Black Mirror is perfect for anyone who wants to explore the idea of a dystopian, eerie, and uncomfortable storyline.

2) Devs

Devs is director Alex Garland's first venture into TV series and it has all the visual appeal, great storyline, and philosophical questioning that leaves viewers wondering about the advancement of technology.

Streaming on Hulu and Prime Video, the story follows Lily (Sonoya Mizuno), a software engineer whose boyfriend dies under mysterious circumstances while working on an undercover project at a Silicon tech company. As she sets out to uncover the truth behind his death, she uncovers something much bigger, that involves the company's shady CEO as well.

Devs touches the same nerves as Severance in its philosophical questioning about technology and how it affects interpersonal human relationships.

3) Corporate

If Corporate was to be described in one sentence - Corporate walked so Severance could run. The show follows the lives of two employees and their daily corporate woes in a large multinational company called Hampton DeVille. The show is hilariously dark as it shows the employees getting called out for petty issues while they plan on ratting out their bosses for committing war crimes!

The show is a hilarious watch as it accurately depicts the feeling that most employees share in the notion of "soul-sucking" corporate culture.

4) Homecoming

Like Severance, Homecoming flaunts a stellar cast, starring the likes of Julia Roberts, Bobby Cannavale, and Janelle Monae.

Homecoming goes one step further than Severance - while Severance follows the wrongdoings and coverups at a workplace, Homecoming does so at a government level - the show follows Julia Roberts, who is a social worker at an enigmatic facility that helps seamlessly transport veterans back into civilian lifestyle, as she questions her time working at this facility.

5) Dark

Dark rose in popularity when it took over social media during the global pandemic in 2020. Originally released in 2017, Dark is available to stream on Netflix and spans over 3 seasons.

Dark is based in a small town in Germany and follows four families and their interpersonal relationships when they begin to search for two children who go missing in the town.

While the storyline may get confusing at first due to the number of characters present in the story, viewers will soon find out how significant each character is to the plot and how they are connected with the dark past of the town.

Following a similar strain as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Maniac portrays the story of two strangers - Emma Stone and Jonah Hill - who volunteer themselves for a three-day drug trial for a treatment that claims to heal their minds and help them overcome their troubles. While Emma Stone is struggling with her relationship with her sister and her mother, Jonah Hill struggles with schizophrenia.

The miniseries is dark and often shows scenes that will leave fans at the edge of their seats, but it is worth the watch for the fan of Severance.

7) Counterpart

If you love spy dramas with a sci-fi twist, Counterpart is the show for you. It stars J.K. Simmons who plays the role of Howard Silk, who has worked as a low-level employee in a spy agency for three decades and is angered by the fact that he does not have clarity about what he does for this entire time.

However, he soon finds out that the spy agency he is associated with also harbors a portal into a parallel universe where his counterpart - another Howard, also played by Simmons - works as a ruthless intelligence agent. What makes this storyline even more interesting is that both these worlds are engaged in a cold war with each other.

Although short-lived, Counterpart managed to keep fans hooked and on the edge of their seat for its entire duration.

8) Mr. Robot

Available to stream on Prime Video, Upload is set in 2033, almost ten years from the current date. In this timeline, humans are able to upload their consciousness into a virtual afterlife. While this may seem pleasant, it does not feel that way for Nathan, a computer programmer who dies mysteriously and is now trapped in his "afterlife."

Nathan ends up stuck in a strange love triangle with his still-alive girlfriend Ingrid, and a customer service rep, Nora, who is also living in the real world. Things take an interesting turn when Nathan tries to play detective and unravel the mysterious reasons behind his death, endangering Nora in the process as well.
