1923 Season 2 sets a Paramount+ streaming record but not in a good way

1923 season 2 recently dropped its new trailer that gives the first look at the Dutton family members after the events that transpired towards the end of the first season. Paramount+ announced that 1923 season 2 will release on February 23, 2025.

This means that the gap between season 1 and season 2 will be more than 2 years—a new record for the gap between two seasons on any original show of the streaming service.

Season 1 of the Western drama premiered on December 18, 2022, while season 2 is slated for a February 2025 release date. This means fans of 1923 have waited for over 2 years and 2 months for its sophomore season to air.

Such a large gap is the first of its kind for a Paramount+ original series launched exclusively under the brand.

Other shows streaming on Paramount+ have had similar gaps but they were all CBS original shows and usually had a delay in production due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

1923 season 2 premieres after more than 2 years on Paramount+

Although fans of the series have waited for a long time, speculation suggests the wait can be attributed to creator and writer Taylor Sheridan juggling a slew of different projects.

Sheridan is highly involved with the creative process of each show. In addition to Yellowstone, 1923, and 1883, he is working on Lioness and has another Yellowstone spin-off in the works.

The delay in releasing 1923 season 2 also seems puzzling to fans, since, unlike shows in the fantasy and sci-fi genres, this Western series does not have much post-production work.

1923 is a prequel to Yellowstone and a sequel to 1883. Besides the harsh Montana winter, the Dutton family will have to fend off Donald Whitfield, a wealthy business tycoon, and Banner Creighton, the Scottish immigrant and sheep farmer who frequently disputes with the family.

What happened in the 1923 season 1 finale

In the season 1 finale, Spencer and his wife Alexandra (also called Alex) boarded the ship SS Majestic bound for London but they were met with Spencer's ex-fiancee, Arthur. After a duel between Spencer and Arthur that resulted in the latter's death, Spencer was forced to disembark from the ship. The two became separated.

In 1923 season 2, Alex will embark on a journey to Bozeman, Montana, to reunite with her husband.

Meanwhile, trouble is brewing at the Dutton family ranch. Whitfield has paid off the ranch's hefty property tax but if they cannot pay him back the money by the end of the year, the land's deed will fall in his possession.

Elsewhere, Jack Dutton's newly-wed wife Elizabeth, who it was revealed was pregnant soon after they exchanged their vows, suffered from a miscarriage.

Banner is out of jail due to a lack of evidence of his attack against the Duttons.

Teonna is finally reunited with her family, but she is not out of the woods yet. Father Renaud and his men are still hunting her.

Finally, one of the ranch hands was beaten and his wife was arrested due to their illegal interracial marriage—a move that was purported by Whitfield.

Isabel May, who plays Elsa Dutton, is the main character in 1883. She reprises her role and narrates the story in 1923 season 2.

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford will reprise their roles as Jacob and Cara Dutton respectively.
