From what started as Vivienne Medrano’s Patreon-funded animated musical on YouTube, Hazbin Hotel has grown into a full-fledged series, gaining a massive fanbase globally. While the pilot dropped on YouTube on October 28, 2019, it took the series over four years to return with its first season on January 19, 2024

Slated for an 8-episode run, the Hazbin Hotel premiered with quadruple-header debut, while the rest of the installments were released weekly on Prime Video. The series was well received, having accumulated an 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 69 on Metacritic.

The first season was mostly focused on the MC, Charlie Morningstar’s resolve to help the sinners redeem their souls and get accepted into Heaven. With the protagonist’s dream unfulfilled and the release of Hazbin Hotel season 2 yet to be announced, this article will highlight some of the best shows to watch while waiting for the next chapter.

Another popular series by Medrano that also gained fame after its release on YouTube is Helluva Boss, which debuted on November 25, 2019. The series also centers on an entirely different side of Hell, following the employees of I.M.P (Immediate Murder Professionals).

While Hazbin Hotel explores redemption and the afterlife, showing Charlie’s efforts in questioning the natural order, Helluva Boss delves into the darker and more comedic side of Hell itself.

Medrano stated that despite the two shows falling in the same universe, the former focuses on interpersonal relationships, while the latter is more about redemption and consequences. As of now, in September 2024, Helluva Boss received two seasons, encompassing 18 episodes.

The Owl House

Created by Dana Terrace, The Owl House follows Luz Noceda, a teenage girl who stumbles into the magical realm of Boiling Isles. There the MC befriends a rebellious witch named Eda and a tiny warrior, King.

The show garnered acclamations for its imaginative world-building, diverse characters, and exploring themes such as identity and self-discovery. The Owl House is a great watch for Hazbin Hotel fans due to its shared whimsical and darkly comedic tone.

Both shows offer unique world-building and a diverse cast of characters. Where Hazbin Hotel explores a twisted version of hell, The Owl House features a magical realm full of strange creatures and unique characters. Fans of one will likely enjoy the other.

The Owl House ended with three seasons abruptly, as Disney stated the series “did not fit the Disney brand.” After wrapping up the show with the third season, Terrace left Disney.

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is simply a gender-swapped version of the original show featuring Fionna (based on Finn) and Cake (based on Jake). The spin-off follows the duo on their own adventures across a multiverse, where they explore new realms, and with it come unique challenges.

The spinoff received much love for its nostalgic yet fresh take for both longtime fans and newcomers. The balance of whimsical storytelling and dark humor is just a fraction of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’s goodness, as the show is also lauded for its unique worldbuilding with rich lore, elements that will resonate deeply with Hazbin Hotel fans.

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake ran for 8 episodes from August 31 to September 28, 2023. Due to the buzzing popularity, the spin-off was eventually renewed for a second season.

From Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, Disenchantment is an animated fantasy series about Princess Bean in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland. Bean is described as a rebellious royal blood, who defies traditional royal expectations, driven by a desire for freedom and self-discovery.

Together with her elf companion, Elfo, and a demon named Luci, Bean embarks on an adventure filled with humor, magic, and mystery. Bean from Disenchantment and Charlie from Hazbin Hotel are known for challenging the expectations of the world and they carry a strong sense of purpose and moral principles.

The blend of humor and mythology and the strong, unconventional female protagonist in Disenchantment is what makes the show a perfect watch for Hazbin Hotel fans.

Carlan McClelland and Matthew Sclissel’s Grimsburg is the latest addition to the animated sitcom lineup. The series follows the story of Marvin Flute, who returns to his eponymous hometown after a long absence to help the police department using his unique set of skills in solving complex cases.

The show combines elements of mystery, comedy, and dark humor, as Marvin uses his Crime Mind to solve local crimes while dealing with personal demons rooted in his eccentric past.

The series has acclaimed popularity for its unique animation style, sharp wit, and clever storytelling. The dark and irreverent sense of humor in Grimsburg is enough to make Hazbin Hotel fans fall in love with the show.
