Baron Li, a family man and a hard worker, started an ordinary day as he stepped out of his Overlook at Lakemont apartment in Washington, but he was greeted by a hooded assailant who fired as many as nine shots at him. Despite taking nine bullets, Li survived the attempt at his life and even made a full recovery, also leading the police to the primary perpetrator behind the attempted murder.
This chilling and miraculous story of Baron Li's assassination attempt and eventual survival is the subject of People Magazine Investigates season 8 episode 8, which premieres at 9 pm EST on December 9, 2024, on ID. The synopsis for the episode reads:
"In 2020, Baron Li, is shot nine times in front of his home. Detectives scramble to figure out who could want this loving husband and father dead. When they hone in on two teenage suspects, police struggle to identify their motives and connection to Li."
This case is filled with chilling details despite it not costing a life. Ahead of the episode, let us go over five such intriguing details that make this attempted murder stand out.
5 key details about Baron Li's attempted murder
1) Li knew from the very start that his ex-wife was behind the attempt on his life
From the very start, Li was sure that his ex-wife had tried to kill him. When the authorities tried to suggest that the shooting could have been random, he claimed that this was not the case and pointed them towards Shaerin Kelley.
Speaking to PEOPLE, he later said:
"I knew it wasn't random, which is what the police initially tried to suggest,"
2) The primary motive behind the crime was chilling
Baron Li and his ex-wife, Shaerin Kelley, shared a differently-abled son who was disabled due to medical malpractice. When the custody of the child was taken away from Kelley, she resorted to violence because she was allegedly after the funds that their son received for his medical expenses after the couple sued for medical malpractice.
As she was the biological mother, this motive is as cold as it gets.
3) Shaerin Kelley hired two teenagers to carry out the murder
Kelley tried to get her husband killed by hiring a 17-year-old boy, Joseph Good, by offering to pay him $13,000. He, in turn, enlisted the help of another 17-year-old, Quincy Mendez, to drive the getaway car.
This car eventually led to Mendez and the case was cracked open.
4) Shaerin Kelley allegedly suggested another attempt at Baron Li's life before getting arrested
After Good fired nine bullets at Baron Li and he still survived miraculously, Shaerin Kelley allegedly suggested another attempt at her ex-husband's life when Good asked for his payment.
This is another instance that portrays how twisted the mind of Shaerin was.
5) All three perpetrators were arrested and duly punished
After Quincy Mendez led to Joseph Good, the authorities soon found a connection between Good and Shaerin with telephone records. All three were soon arrested and all of them pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Baron Li as well.
Shaerin Kelley continues to serve her time at the Washington Corrections Center for Women as of today. The conviction reports of the teenagers have not been made public.
The upcoming episode of People Magazine Investigates will cover this case in further detail.
