1) Corey Lee Hughes was the last person anyone thought would be a victim of a homicide

From early childhood to adulthood, Corey was usually liked and respected by everyone around him. He had two children with a woman he was separated from, yet he still managed to be a very good father to them. So it came as a huge shock when a neighbor reported Corey was lying in a pool of blood outside his house to the police.

2) Police used surveillance footage and Corey's mobile phone to decipher key details about the case

Authorities tracked Corey Lee Hughes' cellphone usage and the time of the 911 call to determine that he was murdered between 7.14 am and 7.30 am. They also delved into the surveillance footage from the house opposite Corey's to determine that a white SUV had been parked outside his home for 4-6 minutes between this time. They also observed a man getting out.

The police also found a .380 shell casing on the floor inside Corey's house. He was shot in the head.

3) Corey Lee Hughes' killer was identified because of a tip

While police found the CCTV footage of the man getting out of the SUV, it was only after a tip they received that they could identify Brandon Key Brown, a criminal with a history of assault, theft, and robbery.

4) Brandon Key Brown claimed he was attacked by Corey first

In a shocking twist, Brandon Key Brown, after initially denying involvement, claimed that he knocked on Corey Lee Hughes' door that morning, but Corey attacked him with a knife. He further claimed that he blacked out after being attacked and only regained full consciousness while driving away.

He allegedly claimed that he realized what he had done only after getting into the car.

5) Brandon Key Brown later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison

Though Brandon Key Brown's initial stories seemed to make little sense, he perhaps realized it later and changed his plea to guilty. After pleading guilty, Brandon Key Brown was sentenced to 65 years in prison.

Though he appealed his sentence shortly after he was imprisoned, it was rejected, and he remains incarcerated at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Indiana.

The upcoming episode of See No Evil will cover this case in more detail.
