Disturbing details of Jason Schaefer's murder
1) The crime took place in broad daylight
Jason Schaefer was killed in broad daylight at midday in the Somerset Meadows neighborhood. While at a group of mailboxes on Heatherhill Street near Renaissance Drive, he was approached by a suspect who shot him several times.
According to CBS News, the police investigated that a suspect, wearing dark clothing, a hooded sweatshirt, and a blue mask, fled the scene. Schaefer died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Later it was found that Devan approached her ex-boyfriend, shot him three times and one of them was in the face.
2) Involvement of Jason's ex-girlfriend and her then-boyfriend
Andrew Ritchie, Devan's then-boyfriend was involved in shooting along with her. Reportedly, Ritchie, the “eyes and ears” of Devan Schreiner, 28, was found guilty in March 2023, of first-degree murder since he fatally shot Jason.
Ritchie's cell phone was monitored along Schaefer's route. It was just before he was seen on surveillance footage at a Loveland Hooters, right at the place where this killing took place. Prosecutors reportedly stated that Ritchie helped Schreiner plan to kill Schaefer by establishing an alibi and tracking him to determine his location.
3) Jason seemed to be dealing with emotional issues
At the time of his death, Jason Schaefer was allegedly struggling with an unhealthy relationship. Reports suggest his girlfriend had a troubled past, and frequent arguments led to emotional strain.
Jason allegedly became more withdrawn and stressed, distancing himself from friends and family. It’s believed that this turmoil contributed significantly to the emotional distress he faced before his tragic end.
4) The murderers allegedly followed the victim
One of the most disturbing things about Jason's murder was that he was being followed constantly.
Before Schaefer's murder, Andrew Ritchie and Devan Schreiner tracked his cell phone. The surveillance footage showed Ritchie's car repeatedly trailing Schaefer's postal van. Ritchie helped plan the murder by tracking Schaefer and setting up Schreiner's alibi, according to prosecutors.
Most of the morning, Ritchie's phone data and Schaefer's postal scanner GPS were together. Schreiner's phone sat near Ritchie's house for hours before the murder.
Also, it could be a result of the ongoing legal custody case for his child. Online public records show Schreiner engaged in continuous child custody conflicts with a 33-year-old Longmont man. There are chances that the killing happened because of legal issues, personal grudges, and so on.
This lack of feeling points to a high level of sociopathy since the killer could do something so horrible without any moral doubts.
5) The reason behind Jason Schaefer's killing
Delvan Schreiner, a 26-year-old Fort Collins resident and the victim's ex-girlfriend, was allegedly charged with first-degree murder charges. Reportedly, just two weeks before the incident, Schreiner got fired from the Longmont post office. The reason for her losing the job was a dispute with Schaefer. So, the motive for the killing was quite clear.
The reason for Jason Schaefer's killing is allegedly linked to an act of domestic violence. Also, the police found that online records suggest Schreiner was involved in a child custody dispute with a 33-year-old Longmont man, with a motion filed just days before the shooting.
There are questions about the relationship between Schaefer and the murderer that could not be addressed properly. It's possible that the intimate nature of the crime was caused by personal feelings, like betrayal or jealousy, which makes the case even scarier.
