The upcoming round of Dateline is all set to cover the case of John Peek, who murdered two of his wives, years apart, both for financial gains. In the process, he also murdered a co-worker of his first wife, taking his total kill count to three. He nearly got away with the first set of murders before he was linked back to the case after his third murder.
Dateline's upcoming episode, which is set to premiere on October 25, 2024, at 9 p.m. EST, will cover this case in detail. The synopsis for the episode reads:
"A woman's murder shines a light on an unsolved mystery from years earlier. As the connection between the two cases becomes clear, a long-hidden truth surfaces."
This case is riddled with tiny details that are crucial to the case. Ahead of the episode, let's go over the details surrounding the crimes of John Peek.
Five key details about John Peek's crimes
1) John reported Carol Marlin missing himself
On the night of June 13, 1996, John reported his common-law wife, Carol Marlin, missing. He claimed that she went out with her colleague Margaret Ginn for dinner but never returned.
The police found both women bludgeoned to death at Ginn's house. Carol Marlin was reportedly hit much harder, which indicated that there was a personal connection between the killer and her.
2) A colleague of Carol Marlin's reported an intruder on the night of Carol's murder
On the same night, John reported Carol missing, Barry Webb, a colleague of Carol Marlin, called 911 to report an intruder. Webb allegedly told the detectives that John Peek was the person who broke into his basement workshop. John later claimed that he went looking for his wife.
Authorities found this rather suspicious, as he never mentioned this in his earlier interviews.
3) John Peek's next wife, Kasi Peek, was also murdered, and both times the crime scene seemed suspicious
After Carol's death, John wasn't charged due to a lack of physical evidence. In 2005, Kasi Peek was found shot to death in their house. The crime scene seemed to imitate a badly staged robbery.
It drew parallels to the crime scene where Carol Marlin was murdered. Authorities found it strange that there was a document in a strange place and a Lockheed invoice had been inserted into Marlin's hand. The name of Barry Webb was written on the paper.
4) In both murders, financial gain for John Peek was involved
In both the murders, Peek stood to gain financially. For Carol Marlin, her insurance beneficiary was changed weeks before her murder. For Kasi Peek, authorities discovered that John was double-paying Kasi’s insurance to ensure that it wouldn’t be canceled.
It became the final element that ultimately implicated John in both cases.
5) Peek pleaded guilty to all three murders
When Peek was finally charged with all three murders, he pleaded guilty to all of them to avoid the death penalty. He was ultimately sentenced to three life sentences, which he has to serve consecutively. He remains incarcerated at the Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia.
