5 chilling details about the murder of Kelsie Schelling

1) Kelsie Schelling's boyfriend convinced her to come to Pueblo, Colorado for a "surprise gift"

21-year-old Kelsie Schelling was pregnant with a child and her family was happy to support her dream of becoming a mother. However, her boyfriend and father of her child, Donthe Lucas, convinced her to come to his hometown, Pueblo, Colorado, to receive a surprise gift.

He later claimed that she had a miscarriage and later drove home to Denver.

2) Donthe Lucas allegedly tried to impersonate Kelsie Schelling over text to keep the pretense that she was alive

After Kelsie went to meet Donthe Lucas, she stopped coming to work. When her friends and relatives tried to reach her, she allegedly did not pick up their calls but replied in a way that seemed very unlike her. Her parents and friends noticed that her texts had uncharacteristic punctuation and curt responses, which indicated that Lucas was perhaps impersonating her.

3) Kelsie's car was captured on a Walmart camera but it contained a single person who police could not identify positively

Lucas told the authorities that he and Kelsie went to Walmart together but the surveillance footage showed only one person. Police assumed that this was Donthe Lucas but they could not positively identify him.

As her body was not found, the case remained a missing person case for a long time.

4) An unknown person helped solve Kelsie Schelling's murder and even had an affair with her murderer

Lauren Suhr, a young single mother who did not personally know Schelling or her family, tried to help get information about her. In the process, she met and got to know Donthe Lucas. The two even went on dates and Donthe fell in love with her. When he proposed, she broke off the relationship but she obtained some crucial information from Donthe.

Apart from Donthe's unusual behavior that she witnessed very often, Lauren Suhr learned from him that he was indeed the person caught on the CCTV footage of the Walmart. This information was crucial in prosecuting Lucas during his trial.

5) The star witness in Donthe Lucas' case died mysteriously before the trial but he was still sentenced to life for the murder

There was one witness who was ready to testify against Donthe Lucas during the trial, but she mysteriously died before the trial. Though this may seem suspicious, authorities affirmed that the murder was unrelated to Lucas' case.

Despite this, Lucas was found guilty of first-degree murder by the jury. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The upcoming episode of Dateline: Secrets Uncovered on Oxygen will cover this case in detail.
