Mary Yoder's murder and Kaitlyn Conley's involvement in it will be shown on Hulu's latest true-crime docuseries, Little Miss Innocent: Passion. Poison. Prison. The case is one of the most prolific ones in the history of Whitesboro, New York, as the victim had a thriving chiropractor practice that was doing really well.
However, all of it changed in an instant when she started feeling a stomach ache, which would kill her just two days later. She was poisoned to death, allegedly by her son, Adam's, on-and-off girlfriend Kaitlyn, who worked under Mary Yoder, making the case perplexing.
Little Miss Innocent: Passion. Poison. Prison. will cover this case in detail as it premieres on Hulu on September 20, 2024. The synopsis for the series reads:
"Tells the story of Kaitlyn Conley, a 31-year-old former receptionist who claims she has been wrongfully convicted of the 2015 killing of Mary Yoder, her former boss and the mother of her ex-boyfriend Adam."
Ahead of the series, let us go over five chilling details about the murder of Mary Yoder, which are still good enough to thrill hardcore true crime fans.
5 key details about Mary Yoder's murder
1) Yoder initially ignored her poisoning, thinking it was an ordinary stomach ache
Mary Yoder started feeling sick on July 20, 2015. After initially complaining about stomach ache, Yoder let it be, hoping it would go away on its own. However, her condition only worsened the next day, prompting her husband to take her to the hospital.
Yoder passed away on July 22, and upon further examination, medical authorities found that she was poisoned. She had been given lethal doses of Colchicine, a drug used to treat gout.
2) An anonymous letter implicated her son, Adam, in the case
When the police started looking into the murder, they received an anonymous letter, which claimed that Adam was behind the murder of his mother. The letter also stated there was a bottle of Colchicine in Adam's car, which turned out to be true.
However, Adam was visiting his sister in Long Island, New York, when his mother was poisoned, and the setup seemed too convenient. Thus, authorities figured out that it might be someone trying to frame Adam.
3) The receipt of the Colchicine led to Adam's on-and-off girlfriend Kaitlyn Conley
The receipt of the Colchicine they found in Adam's car led to Kaitlyn Conley. Kaitlyn had been working at the clinic for about four years and she also had a very turbulent relationship with Adam, which could be seen as a motive.
Other proofs also later implicated Kaitlyn in the case.
4) Adam and Kaitlyn's relationship had many toxic instances
Throughout their long-drawn relationship, which dates back to 2011, the couple had often had extremely offsetting instances. Adam claimed that Kaitlyn had accused him of r*pe once and had once claimed she had an ectopic pregnancy to allegedly get back with him.
These instances proved that the dynamic between Adam and Kaitlyn was toxic enough for the latter to do drastic things.
5) Kaitlyn's first trial ended in a mistrial and in her second trial, she was found not guilty of second-degree murder
Kaitlyn continued to claim that she did not poison Mary Yonder even after she was arrested. In her first trial, the jury could not reach a verdict and it was declared a mistrial.
In her second trial, she was found not guilty of second-degree murder but was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter after new evidence was presented at the trial. She was ultimately sentenced to 23 years in prison.
