Richard Ramirez, known by the alias "Night Stalker," was a serial killer infamous for terrorizing California from April 1984 to August 1985. He was guilty of killing 13 victims, attempting to kill five, raping 11, and burglarizing 14 homes-mostly in Los Angeles, California. His crimes were brutal and haphazard, causing terror across the state of California.

A two-part series titled Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes premiered on Peacock on December 10, 2024. This included interviews from members of Ramirez's own family and friends, as well as family members of many victims.

Five shocking facts about Richard Ramirez's crimes

1) Randomness of victims and locations

Richard Ramirez randomly targeted his victims, choosing them regardless of age, gender, or location. His list of victims included a 9-year-old girl as well as an elderly couple in their 80s.

His unpredictable nature made him particularly frightening, as no one felt safe from his grasp. His attacks spread across diverse locations, from urban homes to suburban neighborhoods, where he often broke into homes at night and struck without warning.

2) Brutal and varied methods

Richard Ramirez employed brutal methods using all different types of weapons such as guns, knives, hammers, and also tire iron. His crimes involved sexual violence and sadistic cruelty, marking survivors, as well as the site of the crime, through intense violence.

3) Satanic rituals and symbolism

Richard Ramirez's criminal acts were often associated with his interest in Satanism. He left satanic symbols, like the pentagram, at places where he committed his crime. He also made some of his victims "swear to Satan" during their encounters with him.

This added to the terror of his crimes as it inferred a deeper, ritual motive to his acts. Public displays of allegiance to Satan only fueled the frenzied media and public panic.

4) Elusiveness and public panic

His way of life and the haphazard nature of the attacks helped him evade capture for more than a year. His elusiveness led to public alarm, as people installed new locks and security systems and even formed neighborhood watches to protect themselves from being targeted.

The media coverage of the "Night Stalker" also heightened the panic, creating an atmosphere of fear in the communities he targeted.

5) Capture and trial

Ramirez was finally apprehended on August 31, 1985, after residents in East Los Angeles chased him down and restrained him until the police arrived. His trial began in July 1988, and it was one of the most sensational in U.S. history, as he went on rants, behaved defiantly, and flashed the pentagram on his palm.

He was sentenced to death in 1989. However, Ramirez succumbed to complications from B-cell lymphoma in 2013 before his execution.
