The murder case of Trent Mallory shocked many, and evidence from the investigation also brought forth some frightening facts. The 36-year-old man from Michigan was discovered dead by a gunshot wound to the head in his Levering home on March 6, 2014.

His fiancée, Amber Smith, had reportedly returned to a house that had been ransacked and found his body, prompting her to call 911 shortly after. The probe quickly turned the suspicion on Smith as the prosecution cited financial strain and gambling issues as a motive for Mallory's murder. It was not long before law enforcement managed to charge Amber Smith with committing Mallory's murder.

This strange murder case will be detailed in the upcoming episode "Ice Cold Killer" of Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 8/7c on Oxygen.

Here are five chilling details that have so far come out of this case and shed light on the circumstances surrounding Trent Mallory's death.

5 shocking facts about Trent Mallory's homicide

1) The mystery of the broken-in house

On March 6, 2014, Amber Smith called 911 and reported that there was a burglary in her house. At that time deputies arrived at the house to find it in disarray; Trent Mallory's body was found lying in the bed with a gunshot wound to the head.

Initially, the scene seemed like a break-in gone wrong, but there was no evidence of a forced entry. So investigators started questioning Smith's story and investigated her involvement in the case more deeply.

2) Financial troubles and Smith’s gambling addiction

The investigation shed light on the financial troubles of the couple. Amber Smith had a compulsive addiction to gambling, and she and her fiancée were suffering from crushing financial insecurity and debt.

Trent Mallory's car had been repossessed, and the couple stood the risk of losing their home. The accumulating debts seemed to put pressure on their relationship as well. This made the investigators question if Smith's finances were indeed a motive that made her want to murder Mallory.

3) The murder weapon and Smith's involvement

The .22 caliber rifle was the murder weapon and it was discovered buried in the snow near Smith's sister's house. Police were able to trace the rifle back to Smith since it had appeared in Facebook pictures that showed that the rifle was in Trent Mallory's possession before the murder.

The prints on the rifle matched with Smith and she claimed to have bought the rifle after the murder. A different story told by Smith about the weapon only added to suspicion about her role in the crime.

4) Inconsistent stories and evidence of pre-meditation

As the investigation proceeded, the stories of Smith began to be inconsistent. She also initially claimed the rifle was bought for protection, then reversed the tale stating that she had intended to buy the gun from a man named "Snow."

The authorities also noted the couple's financial situation was at a breaking point and the prosecution claimed that Smith planned the murder because her financial problems were getting out of control. Considering all the evidence, it appeared that the shooting incident was not a spontaneous act but a well-thought-out crime.

5) Trent Mallory’s unusual behavior on the morning of his death

On the day of the murder, when his family members were unable to contact him, Mallory's siblings grew worried about him. Trent Mallory's sister called him several times, but he didn't respond. She testified that this was unusual for Mallory.

His dogs, who slept with him, were in the barn asleep, which was quite unusual because it had also been freezing outside on that particular morning. Such strange circumstances raised suspicion as to when he was killed and by whom.
