Premiering today on Apple TV+, the animated series WondLa has created quite a buzz. This is hardly surprising as in recent years, animated content has amassed a wider fan following. The reasons for this can be narrowed down to technical advancements leading to better visuals and a renewed focus on universal narratives that are equally exciting for young viewers as well as adults.

And from the looks of the aesthetic trailer, it seems like the seven-episode WondLa will cater to all ages. Young Eva has never been outside the bunker where she has been raised by her robot caretaker, Muthr. But when the bunker is attacked, she ventures out and finds herself on a strange planet called Orbona.

The planet is inhabited by all kinds of fauna and aliens but she cannot find anyone else like her. But something makes Eva believe that she is not the only one of her kind so she sets out to look for other humans. If this premise is not enough to tempt viewers to tune in, the interesting facts on this list will certainly do the trick.

People from the gaming community know Tony DiTerlizzi for his work on the world-famous collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Whereas bookworms will recognize him as the co-author of the beloved fantasy book series, The Spiderwick Chronicles. WondLa is based on DiTerlizzi's fantasy novels namely The Search for WondLa, A Hero for WondLa, and The Battle for WondLa.

Since DiTerlizzi is no stranger to fantasy narratives, viewers can rest assured that WondLa will not disappoint in terms of fascinating world-building and memorable characters. As the protagonist is an adolescent, the show will also appeal to viewers who have a soft corner for heartwarming coming-of-age stories.

Fans of the genre would agree that appealing visuals form the core of any good animated series. WondLa comes from a relatively new animation studio called Skydance Animation formed only in 2017.

Although they aren't as famous as some of the bigger animation studios, Skydance Animation's potential for impressive visuals came through in their first feature film, Luck, released back in 2022. Directed by Peggy Holmes, it centers around Sam Greenfield, voiced by Eva Noblezada, who has always had bad luck. But she realizes that a talking black cat may be able to help turn her luck around.

Interestingly enough, WondLa isn't the only 2024 release from Skydance Animation. The studio is also working on an animated musical film named Spellbound that is set to release sometime in November.

3) Jeanine Mason voices the protagonist

As Eva is the central character in the narrative, fans of the books were eager to see who would be cast to voice her. The team finally went with Jeanine Mason. Her ticket to fame was winning the fifth season of So You Think You Can Dance (2005). After enthralling viewers with her dancing skills, she ventured into acting.

She has played both small and big roles in several films and shows including Grey's Anatomy (2005), Roswell, New Mexico (2019), and NCIS: Los Angeles (2009). Mason also has considerable experience in voice acting. She voiced Minuet Sonata in the show Trolls: TrollsTopia (2020) and Christina Christo in the recently released film, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate.

It is safe to say that Mason with her varied skills is the perfect choice to play the spirited Eva who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

Like captivating visuals, a memorable score also plays an important role in animated content. After all, the beloved Lion King (1994) directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff would feel incomplete without the moving score by the award-winning Hans Zimmer.

29-year-old Ngiaw caught the attention of industry stalwarts with her score for the short film Blush produced by Skydance Animation. In fact, Hollywood Music in Media bestowed the film with the award for Best Music. She was also responsible for the heartwarming music in Rescued by Ruby which premiered on Netflix in 2022.

So, it is safe to say that the talented Ngiaw is more than capable of creating a score that does justice to Tony DiTerlizzi's imaginative work.

5) Teri Hatcher voices Muthr

59-year-old Teri Hatcher has had an illustrious career. She is best remembered for her roles as Lois Lane on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993–1997) and Susan Mayer on Desperate Housewives (2004–2012).

Like Jeanine Mason, Hatcher also has played voice roles in the past. She voiced Coraline's Mother in Coraline (2009) and Dottie in both Planes (2013) and Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014). Viewers may not be aware that she also voiced Beatrice LeBeak in Jake and the Never Land Pirates (2011) aimed at preschoolers.

Hatcher's years of experience playing varied roles will help her bring depth and vivacity to Muthr's character who plays a vital role in Eva's upbringing.

Fans of the genre who are looking for a new series to binge-watch with the entire family should add WondLa on Apple TV+ to their June 2024 watchlist.
