Since its December 12 release, La Palma has amassed over 13.1 million views, making it the most watched foreign-language series on Netflix.

It is a four-part Norwegian series set on the Canary Island of La Palma, known for its active volcano. The show blends personal drama with the looming threat of a volcanic eruption, featuring a young scientist, a group of geologists, and a Norwegian family on vacation. The cast includes Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, and Thea Sofie Loch Naess.

The show pits viewers against the clock in an attempt to avert catastrophe. Although it is not based upon an actual incident, some of its realism is taken from Cumbre Vieja's volcano near La Palma.

If viewers enjoyed La Palma, check out these five disaster-based shows that similarly combine personal stakes with thrilling catastrophes.

1) Silo (2023)

Both La Palma and Silo explore survival in confined or isolated environments where characters must uncover hidden truths to prevent catastrophe. While Silo focuses on life within an underground society, La Palma centers on the life-threatening volcanic eruption and the desperate race to alert others before it is too late.

The Silo is a science fiction drama based on Hugh Howey's Silo trilogy. It follows engineer Juliette, played by Rebecca Ferguson, who uncovers shocking truths about her community living in a massive underground silo with 144 floors. In this dystopian future, humanity fights for survival while Juliette's discoveries threaten the society's foundation.

Like La Palma, this series examines how individuals cope with the breakdown of normal life following a disaster.

Station Eleven is a post-apocalyptic miniseries based on Emily St. John Mandel's 2014 novel. It follows a group of survivors who work as traveling entertainers and encounter a violent cult led by a man connected to one of their pasts, 20 years after a virus outbreak collapsed society.

It tracks the bizarre turns of events that unite five individuals: the actor, the man who attempted to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, who is in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet.

Both shows focus on small groups of survivors in crises. In Dead City, characters face constant threats in a post-apocalyptic world, while in La Palma, the danger stems from an imminent volcanic eruption that could cause worldwide devastation. Both highlight the importance of human relationships and quick decision-making during disasters.

Based on Maggie and Negan from The Walking Dead, Eli Jorné developed the television series The Walking Dead: Dead City for AMC. As the fifth series in the Walking Dead franchise, it shares continuity with the other television shows and is the first sequel to the Walking Dead television series.

In order to find Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel, the show follows Maggie and Negan as they venture into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan that is sealed off from the mainland.

The dead and residents who have turned New York City into its own chaotic, dangerous and terrifying world are scattered across the deteriorating city.

4) Fallout (2024)

Like La Palma, Fallout delves into the consequences of a catastrophic event—in this case, nuclear fallout—forcing characters to confront their new reality. Both shows highlight the emotional and physical challenges of surviving in a world transformed by disaster.

Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet produced the drama television series Fallout for Amazon Prime Video based on the franchise of role-playing video games.

An underground fallout shelter is violently raided by robbers years after a nuclear catastrophe destroys America, forcing one of its occupants to venture out into a desolate wasteland teeming with radiation, mutant beasts, and a lawless society of individuals who have stayed on the surface.

Both La Palma and To the Lake follow families grappling with life-threatening situations. While To the Lake deals with the outbreak of a mysterious virus, La Palma focuses on a volcanic eruption. In both, family dynamics are tested as characters are pushed to their limits in the fight for survival.

To the Lake is a Russian post-apocalyptic thriller about a deadly virus spreading through Moscow, causing chaos. Sergey and his family flee to a remote island to escape the outbreak. As lawlessness spreads and they face threats without money or power, they must set aside their differences to survive.

The series, based on Yana Vagner's novel Vongozero, is Russia's first post-apocalyptic TV show, focusing on family, forgiveness, and survival during a global crisis.
