On December 27, 2017, Karen Ailén Grodzinski's lifeless body was found in the heart of Mexico City, outside the Pasadena Hotel in room 214. She was the third woman listed on Zona Divas to die, as revealed on Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas.
Her death caught the attention of the Mexican media as the alleged killer was a known face. Karen Ailén Grodzinski's death was once again a reminder for the women listed on the Zona Divas of how the same thing could happen to them, too.
The latest four-episode limited true crime documentary on Netflix titled Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas delves into the Zona Divas' website and their history of abusing and killing women. The official synopsis of the same reads as follows:
"In Mexico City's dark underbelly, women seeking better lives become entangled in an online escort network, unaware it will lead to a series of femicides."
5 Key Facts About Karen Ailén Grodzinski’s Murder
1) After the death of Genesis Gibson, Karen was scared
As per the show Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas, after Genesis Gibson died a gruesome death in late 2017, her peer/co-worker Karen Ailén Grodzinski was scared that something might happen to her and she might also be killed by the same assassin who killed her friend.
A day before Karen Ailén Grodzinski's death, she even informed her family about the death of Genesis. She shared the news with them so that they stayed aware of what was happening to her and the women around her.
2) Karen Ailén Grodzinski was in 'bad shape' even before her death
As shown in Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas, Karen Ailén Grodzinski wished her friend Sarah well on her birthday. She told her that she was going to be leaving the escort business soon, one month before her death, as it was breaking her emotionally and physically. Karen is heard crying and attempting to conceal her anguish in the voice notes to her mother and friend, as seen on the show.
3) The manner of death was scarring
When the authorities found Karen’s lifeless body, she had bullet wounds. The killer had also cut her with a sharp object, possibly a blade, because of which there were several cuts all over her body.
Karen was the third escort to die, and her manner of death was similar to that of her friend Genesis Gibson, who died a month before her. However, to date, it is unknown whether or not the same assassin killed both women.
4) The killer roams around free to date
After Karen was killed and the investigations began, a man who was spotted in the hotel cameras leaving the scene wearing a motorcycle helmet was later arrested. Alejandro Axel Arena Reyes, a popular actor from Mexico City, was the alleged killer.
According to the authorities, he had escaped the scene in a low-displacement motorcycle. Axel was initially arrested and, if found guilty, had to serve up to sixty years in jail.
However, the investigations revealed that Axel and Karen Ailén were friends and had attended classes at the same studying academy. Because of a lack of evidence, Axel was later released, and the cameras also pointed out his innocence.
In Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas, Axel talks about how the officers were not doing their job well and how the investigations were not done fairly after Karen Ailén Grodzinski's death. Axel said:
“There are a lot of people who are not doing their job well. I was very fortunate for many reasons ….Karen’s murderer is still on the loose …”
5) The prosecution omitted several important tests
After Karen’s unusual death, a proper post-death examination or a post-mortem was not done. The prosecution didn’t do blood or other tests that could give them more clues or evidence as they believed that they already caught the alleged murderer, Axel, who was later released when found innocent.
The news channels that reported the death of Karen Ailén Grodzinski told the people of Mexico that:
"…Even you and I know from so many CSI episodes that it is the first thing to do in any crime . ..”
In defense of why the tests were not done, Edmundo Garrido (Procurador CDMX) said:
“We are talking about an accusatory system that has different rules than the traditional system ….”
Caught in the Web: The Murders Behind Zona Divas is now airing on Netflix.
