Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, a new two-part true-crime docuseries on Netflix, will center on the 1989 disappearance of Aundria Bowman from her home and how her biological mother contributed to the investigation and eventual delivery of justice. Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter will arrive on Netflix on September 12, 2024. The official synopsis for the same reads as,
"A tenacious mother unravels the complex mystery surrounding the 1989 disappearance of the daughter she placed for adoption."
Alexis Badger, daughter of Cathy Tarkanian, was given up for adoption when she was just nine months old. Michigan resident Dennis and Brenda Bowman adopted the baby and named her Aundria Bowman. On March 11, 1989, Aundria mysteriously vanished from her home, and in 2020 her skeletal remains were found, confirming her death.
Aundria Bowman's adoptive father, Dennis Bowman, was found guilty of her murder in 2020. He was previously arrested in 2019 for the murder and r*pe of a Virginia resident, Kathleen Doyle, in 1980 and was sentenced to life for the same. While he was serving his sentence, he also confessed to killing his adopted daughter, after which he was sentenced to an additional 35–50 years in prison.
As per prison records, he is currently at the Virginia Department of Corrections, serving his two life sentences.
Here are five facts concerning Aundria Bowman's death
1) Aundria Bowman’s body was dismembered
Reportedly, Aundria Bowman’s skeletal remains were found in Dennis Bowman’s property in 2020, 31 years after she disappeared. Dennis reportedly dismembered her body parts with an axe, after which he buried them in the backyard of his Hamilton residence.
2) Dennis Bowman lied about Aundria's disappearance
According to CBS News, on March 11, 1989, Aundria Bowman vanished from her Michigan home without explanation. Her father reported the incident to the police, claiming that she had stolen $100 and left the house.
3) Dennis Bowman’s chilling confession
As reported by CBS, in 2020, Bowman confessed to killing his daughter. He told the authorities that he punched Aundria, which caused her to lose balance and fall down a set of stairs.
After she broke her neck and died, Bowman tried to fit her dead body inside a barrel. However, to do so, he had to cut off her legs with an axe. The barrel with Aundria's body was first buried by Bowman in his Holland home and later shifted to his Hamilton residence.
4) Her biological mother did not know about her disappearance for 10 years
Aundria’s biological mother, Cathy Terkanian, did not know about her disappearance until 2010. When she started her journey of finding Aundria and the truth, she speculated that Dennis Bowman had killed her. In 2020, when the skeletal remains of her daughter were found and a DNA test confirmed the same, she told FOX 17,
"I knew he did this. If I had to look one other direction, I might have gone crazy. I never heard my daughter's voice, I don’t know if she’s right-handed or left-handed, but I know her through and through. I just became convinced he buried her in his yard, so he could control what happened. As long as he didn’t open his mouth.”
5) Aundria was allegedly s**ually abused by her adoptive father
As reported by AP News, Aundria was just fourteen years of age when she disappeared. Before her disappearance, she claimed that she had been molested by her adoptive father, Dennis Bowman. Brenda Bowman, Aundria’s adoptive mother and Dennis’s wife, confirmed that the young girl had spoken to her about Dennis abusing her.
As per Holland Sentinel, when Aundria confronted Dennis and threatened to report him, the two got into an argument that ended with Aundria falling down the stairs to her death. The judge, who declared Dennis Bowman guilty, talked about his heinous deeds and said,
"Mr Bowman is unsafe for our community. His numerous assaults, his behavior in this case, and other convictions all indicate Mr Bowman is a serious, dangerous man that has harmed many communities, many families. It’s impossible even to articulate the words to describe what he has done. Reading what he has done is sickening.”
