5 important details, conspiracies, and other information related to the 1947 Roswell Incident
1) Statements were recanted by the US Army officials
The 509th bomb squadron announced that they recovered a flying disc near Lincoln County, New Mexico.
The Roswell Army Air Field initially released a statement in 1947, which read:
"The many rumors regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's office of Chaves County."
However, the US Army officials later recanted their statement and called the debris recovered as debris of a weather balloon, citing all claims of a UFO crash as a hoax.
2) Project Mogul had to be kept a secret
In 1994, another story surfaced regarding the alleged UFO crash. Reportedly, the debris found was later claimed to be from a spy device, which was made for a secret project called Project Mogul.
As per a 1994 report by USAF, multiple high-altitude balloons were created with microphones attached to them, to fly over the USSR, which could detect any kind of atomic tests. The balloons acted as a spying device for the US and the story of the crash was necessary to cover up the actual mission’s secret.
3) A teenage prank
Reportedly, in 1947, the government also gave another explanation to justify one more mysterious debris and another alleged UFO crash. A few days after the Roswell incident, the Twin Falls Saucer hoax surfaced, which was a prank by teens, who used parts from a jukebox, to make up a convincing story about the flying saucer found in Twin Falls, Idaho on July 11, 1947.
4) The Aztec New Mexico crashed saucer hoax
A year after the Roswell incident, another story of a UFO crash surfaced in Aztec, New Mexico, which garnered media attention in 1948. The media report about this hoax claimed that at the site of the Aztec, New Mexico crashed saucer, unusual metal, small and grey humanoid bodies, and many other mysterious objects and elements were found.
This story gained popularity after the con artists behind it convinced a Variety journalist to report the hoax crash. Despite being a con, Air Force investigator James McAndrew wrote in a 1997 Roswell report that:
"...even with the exposure of this obvious fraud, the Aztec story is still revered by UFO theorists. Elements of this story occasionally reemerge and are thought to be the catalyst for other crashed flying saucer stories, including the Roswell Incident."
5) Jesse Marcel called the Roswell incident a coverup story
In a 1978 interview with Ufologist Stanton Friedman, US Air Force officer Jesse Marcel stated that the government attempted to conceal the Roswell incident by referring to it as a weather balloon crash. Marcel, however, claimed that the debris was extraterrestrial in origin.
Marcel was one of the officers present at the press conference about the Roswell debris. Later in a September 20, 1980, interview on the TV series In Search of..., he discussed the press conference and revealed:
"They wanted some comments from me, but I wasn't at liberty to do that. So, all I could do is keep my mouth shut. And General Ramey is the one who discussed – told the newspapers, I mean the newsman, what it was, and to forget about it. It is nothing more than a weather observation balloon. Of course, we both knew differently."
