Diane Jones' murder remains one of the oldest unsolved cases from Essex-Suffolk, which despite having some evidence against the primary suspect, remained cold. This murder dates back to 1983 but remains just as spine-chilling today. Both the manner of the murder and how the investigation yielded no results make this a very uncomfortable topic from the history of Essex-Suffolk.
This case is the subject of Britbox's docu-series, Murder In The Village: Who Killed The Doctor's Wife?, which examines the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and subsequent murder of the then 35-year-old Diane Jones. The synopsis for the docu-series reads:
"After his wife Diane vanished in 1983, suspicion centered on her respected GP husband Robert Jones, but he was never charged by the police. Now, new evidence reveals Diane Jones's secrets."
This case is filled with interesting details, which may appear small, but speak loudly about the murder of Diane Jones.
Five chilling details about Diane Jones' murder
1) Diane Jones allegedly returned home with her husband that night before she disappeared
On July 23, 1983, Diane and her husband, Robert Jones, visited a local pub called Woolpack Inn in her hometown of Coggeshall, Essex. That is the night she reportedly disappeared but not before the couple had made it home before midnight.
Robert allegedly told the police that Diane disappeared when he left her by their gate to park up and handle their dog. She wasn't found for over three months.
2) Robert Jones did not report his wife missing for nine days after her disappearance
In what can be considered the most startling thing about the case, Robert Jones waited for nine days before he reported his wife missing. This seemed to indicate that he had some involvement in the murder.
3) Diane Jones' body was found months later, brutally murdered
After Jones went missing that night and Robert reported her missing nine days later, authorities started an extensive search for the 35-year-old woman. However, nothing was found till October 22, 1983. Diane was finally discovered in a deeply wooded area around 30 miles away in a copse in Brightwell near Suffolk.
She was brutally bludgeoned to death with something that resembled a slater’s hammer. She had at least four skull fractures and had reportedly died around late July, as per the autopsy.
4) A witness from the pub claimed that Diane had expressed fear about Robert beating her
In a much later development, a witness recalled that they had seen the couple on the night of Diane Jones' disappearance. Diane was allegedly very drunk that night and was creating a fuss. Diane was also reportedly refusing to leave with Robert, claiming that he would beat her.
Robert allegedly went to the car with their belongings and their dog first and later came back to carry Diane. Whatever happened following that remains a secret.
5) Robert Jones remained the only suspect in the murder till his death in 2023
Robert Jones not only remained the only suspect in his wife's death but also the only person of interest throughout the investigation. He was also arrested and questioned multiple times by the police. But no concrete evidence ever linked him the the murder, which means that this case remains unsolved even now.
Robert Jones passed away on March 7, 2023, at the age of 80. He was living in France.
