The 2004 murder of Diane Malone at her Long Beach residence brought the community to a standstill. Malone was stabbed and bludgeoned to death by her estranged husband out of hatred and jealousy over marital separation.

The first episode of American Monster titled "I Saw Dad Kill Mom" brings the gruesome details of Diane Malone's murder as it airs on June 16, 2024, at 9 p.m. EST on Investigation Discovery. The official synopsis reads,

"The lives of a beautiful young family in Long Beach, New York, rip apart when five-year-old Audrey witnesses her mother, Diane, brutally stabbed to death; to Audrey's horror, her mother's murderer is somebody very close to home."

1) Diane Malone was found dead in her bedroom on September 13, 2004

Diane Malone was found by her neighbor, Rawa Lazaar, lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom on September 13, 2004. David Malone had stabbed Diane at least 13 times, including the heart, according to the New York Daily News.

Diane also showed signs of being bludgeoned, indicating that her estranged husband, David, had stomped on her during the killing.


2) Diane's eldest daughter, Audrey, drew attention to the crime scene

David Malone murdered his wife in cold blood and left her body in the house with three of her unharmed children - Audrey, 6, Matthew, 3, and Nathan 1, per The New York Times. Diane had been at the orientation of her adult school when her mother-in-law, Joan Malone, had been babysitting the children.

Hours later, Audrey was found smeared in her mother's blood and calling out for help. She initially asked her neighbors to play with her, after which she shared,

“Mommy’s not moving."

Diane was then discovered dead in her 91 Alabama Avenue residence.


3) Diane Malone had a restraining order issued against David Malone

Diane's family, friends, and neighbors hinted at marital problems between the couple after their marriage. According to the New York Times, Long Beach Police Department officials visited the residence seven times over complaints of domestic disturbance. A neighbor, Joseph Schmidt, shared with the New York Daily News,

“No one knows the intimacies of what really went on between them as a married couple, but she mentioned it many times over time: ‘If I don’t go, if I don’t leave, I may never be able to.’ ”

According to the New York Post, Diane had a restraining order issued against David in January for domestic violence and he had had to take anger-management classes as part of the agreement.


4) No murder weapon was found

According to the New York Post, David had stopped by the house uninvited while Joan had been babysitting the children and had allegedly asked his mother to leave him alone with them. David fled the scene, leaving Diane's stabbed body in the house with his children.

The officials from the Long Beach Police Department could not locate a murder weapon. The authorities checked several knives from the residence and the sewers as well but never found a murder weapon for the crime.


5) David Malone was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison

David Malone had escaped the crime scene to hide in an empty house two blocks from the crime scene on Wisconsin Street. The authorities arrested him on September 16, 2004.

The Nassau County Homicide Squad Lt. Dennis Farrell elaborated on David's criminal past as he shared with Herald Community Newspapers,

"From 1985 to 1990, there were a number of arrests ranging from criminal contempt to assault. In 1990, he was arrested for assaulting a Long Beach police officer, and in 2001 he was arrested for assaulting a co-worker."

David Malone received a life sentence in prison with the possibility of parole after 17 years.
