1) Dion Smith was an upstanding citizen of West Baltimore whose life came to a tragic end abruptly

Dion Smith was hardly the kind of person who would be on someone's hit list. He worked two jobs to support his family and was beloved by everyone in the community. It came as a major shock when he was found dead from a shotgun wound in his residence in the 1400 block of Argyle Avenue in the Upton neighborhood of West Baltimore, Maryland.

2) His killer was immediately singled out due to a CCTV recording

As authorities responded to the call and found Dion Smith brutally murdered, they discovered a very easy piece of evidence — CCTV footage depicting the killer entering and leaving. This led them to Terrell Gibson, a man with a criminal history, who was clearly seen at the site of the murder.

3) The police found the suspect but no motive for the crime

After witnesses also stepped up to testify against Terrell Gibson, the authorities got a search warrant and arrested him. However, despite their best efforts, they could not find the murder weapon. They also could not find a motive for the murder but alleged that Gibson and Smith were having a dispute inside Gibson's property, which ended in the murder.

4) Terrell Gibson was sentenced to a suspended life sentence, which would possibly keep him in prison for the rest of his life

Gibson did not admit his guilt and was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, assault, and reckless endangerment. He was taken to the court, where he continued to claim he was innocent. But the mountain of evidence against him meant that the jury found him guilty of the murder.

He was sentenced to life in prison, out of which he had to serve 65 years. He was also given an additional 15 years for unlawful usage of a firearm.

5) Dion Smith's family got justice but not the closure they were hoping for

When Gibson was sentenced to prison for 80 years, Dion Smith's family got the justice they deserved but Terrell Gibson never admitted his guilt or apologized to the family. Instead, he told them:

"One day, you will find the person guilty of this crime. Once again, I maintain my innocence."

Anyhow, he continues to serve his sentence at North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.
