The horrific murder-suicide that took place in Chicago in July 2022 took the life of Sania Khan and her husband, Raheel Ahmad. Sania and Raheel had been undergoing a divorce and the former had taken to her Tiktok account to share her struggles in real life.

Raheel traveled from Alpharetta to Chicago and entered Sania's condominium complex to fatally shoot her in the head, per The Chicago Sun-Times. The Deadly Influence: The Social Media Murders episode titled TikTok Terror chronicles Sania Khan's unfortunate murder as it airs on June 10, 2024, at 9 pm EST on Investigation Discovery.

The official synopsis reads:

"As 28-year-old Sania battles through a divorce, her passionate and searingly honest TikToks attract tens of thousands of followers. But she soon discovers that members of her community want to silence her -- and will stop at nothing to do it."

Five details about Sania Khan's murder explored

1) Sania Khan was shot to death on July 18, 2022

The Chicago Police found Sania Khan's dead body at the entrance of her condominium in Streeterville, Chicago, on July 18, 2022. The 29-year-old allegedly had plans to move to her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Sania had been staying in the apartment she had rented out with her to-be ex-husband, Raheel Ahmad. Ahmad had traveled over 700 miles to allegedly salvage their failing marriage, per Fox News. Sania was fatally shot in the back of the head.


2) Raheel Ahmad shot himself at the crime scene on the same day

Raheel Ahmad, 36, was reported missing from his home in Alpharetta, Georgia. Ahmad had moved to Alpharetta and reportedly had a long history of mental health issues, according to the Time. Ahmad's family reported his disappearance to the Alpharetta Police who, in turn, requested the Chicago Police for a welfare check at the apartment building.

As the authorities approached the apartment, they heard a gunshot followed by a groan. The police officers entered the building to find Raheel Ahmad in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head.

He was rushed to the Northwestern Hospital where he was declared dead later, per the Dawn.


3) Sania Khan filed for divorce in December 2021

Sania had reportedly spoken to her friends about a particular incident in December when she felt her mental well-being was being compromised by staying in the marriage with Raheel Ahmad. According to The Chicago Sun-Times, Ahmad was depressed and he allegedly refused to seek help.

Sania's friends encouraged her to work towards separation and she filed for divorce in December 2021, according to NBC Chicago. She also changed the locks of her house, acquired a restraining order against Ahmad, and removed his name from their lease.

According to NBC Chicago, Raheel had tried to push Sania out of their 28th-floor window in December 2021.


4) Khan spoke about her struggle against the stigma around divorces in South Asian communities

Despite breaking communication and dependence in their equation, Sania faced backlash for the divorce as a South Asian Muslim woman. She reportedly took to her social media account on TikTok and spoke about her journey around the stigma in society.

One of her posts on TikTok read:

"Going through a divorce as a South Asian woman feels like you failed at life sometimes."

Sania garnered around 20,000 followers on her TikTok account after opening up about her experiences.


5) Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences started a memorial scholarship dedicated to Sania

According to Local3 News, Sania Khan's funeral took place on July 28, 2022. A GoFundMe campaign gathered $36,000 for her funeral and the proceeds were donated to organisations working against domestic violence such as Peaceful Families Project and Sakhi for South Asian Women.

The Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences held a candlelight vigil. With the assistance of Sania's friends Cora-Leigh O'Neal and James Cummins, the school began a fine arts scholarship program named The Sania Khan Memorial Scholarship Fund for females with a GPA of at least 3.5.
