Before the episode airs, let's take a look at 5 important details surrounding the Sun Gym Gang and their crimes.

5 important details about the Sun Gym Gang

1) The Sun Gym Gang consisted of bodybuilders

Reportedly, The Sun Gym Gang, of Miami Florida was active during the mid-1990s. The gang as the name suggests, consisted of bodybuilders from the Sun Gym in North Miami. Two of its key members were Daniel Lugo and Noel “Adrian” Doorbal.

Daniel Lugo was the manager of the Sun Gym in 1993, while Doorbal worked there part-time. Previously Lugo had been arrested in 1991 after he pleaded guilty to fraud. He served a 15-month sentence for the same plus three years of federal probation.

2) Daniel Lugo and Noel Doorbal were initially sentenced to death

As per reports by NBC, Daniel Lugo and Noel Doorbal, the members of the Sun Gym Gang killed Florida beach couple Krisztina Furton and Frank Griga in 1995. The bodies of Furton and Griga were dismembered and their torsos were put into barrels after the other body parts in buckets and disposed of them. They were also injected with horse tranquillisers as per NBC.

Prosecutor Scott Warfman, who took over this case, made some harrowing revelations in court. Here is what he said:

"What did it look like when they put a hood over (Kriztina's) heads as she is screaming for Frank, and then they injected her with enough horse tranquilizer to kill a horse...(Kriztina), also in an oil barrel, was 5’5, about 40 pounds without her head, her hands, and her feet."

Initially, Lugo and Doorbell were sentenced to death but later the sentences were dismissed. Lugo remains on death row and Doorbal’s death sentence was overturned in 2017.

3) Bloodied clothing and a kidnap kit were recovered from Daniel Lugo’s girlfriend's home

As per CBS, when search warrants were issued after Frank and Krisztina disappeared mysteriously, police did a quick search of Danny Lugo’s girlfriend’s apartment. What they found was beyond scary. There were clothes stained with blood which belonged to the missing persons. Apart from that, there was duct tape, handcuffs, stun guns, and more.

Felix Jimenez, the lead detective in this case told CBS:

"There was some damning evidence there ... bloody clothing belonging to Frank and Krisztina, there was the kidnap kit -- a case with duct tape ...guns, [stun guns], handcuffs -- there was so much evidence in that apartment..."

4) Members of the Sun Gym Gang kidnapped Marc Schiller

Reportedly, Daniel Lugo, Doorbal, and Stevenson Pierre conspired to abduct Schiller in 1994, so that they could force him to sign over his assets and kill him.

Allegedly, Schiller, a businessman had stolen $100,000 from Lugo and $200,000 from another gym member. After several failed abduction attempts, in November 1994, the gang tased the businessman, punched him, and put him in a van. After signing over all his assets, the gang tried to kill him in a car crash so that they could benefit from his million-dollar medical insurance policy. However, Schiller made a narrow escape in the final moments.

Schiller was later arrested on charges related to an “extensive Medicare scam” as per CBS. Schiller entered a plea deal, served 2 years in federal prison, and paid "$137,000 in restitution" as per CBS.

Schiller talked about the Sun Gym Gang members to CBS and called them "cold-blooded murderers." Referring to the 2013 comedy movie Pain & Gain, which was based on Lugo and Doorbal's abduction of Schiller, he said :

"It's a comedy, which is unfortunate, because there was nothing funny that happened to me," he said. "These were inept, incompetent people, but they were at the same time malicious and cold-blooded murderers."

Schiller did not get his money and property back either.

5) The Sun Gym Gang tried to kidnap Winston Lee

In 1995, members of the gang planned to kidnap and extort a Jamaican resident who also went to the Sun Gym named Winston Lee. However, they never moved forward with this plan, the reasons for which remain unknown.

All seven members of the gang were sent to prison with respective sentences when found guilty of multiple charges. Lugo continues to remain on death row and has appealed his conviction several times in the last 15 years. Doorbal's death sentence was overturned in 2017 but he continues to serve his life sentence.
